Farm Girl In Training. Balancing my stilettos with my Muckboots. February 4, 2014. Recently, a dear friend and several people she knows began a grassroots effort to shut down a local puppy mill. It all started with pictures posted on Facebook at the beginning of January. Within a month, the dogs were seized and the “owner” (hesitate to use that word) has been charged. I did my part by helping get the word out about these dogs. Now, I’m trying to do my part again. In fact, they were encouraged; nearly 40%...

I’m sure I’ve written about it here before, but I’ve read, highlighted, annotated, and studied this book:. Said highlighted, annotated, and well-loved book. I’m star...

Farm Girl In Training. Balancing my stilettos with my Muckboots. June 7, 2014. Things on this end of the blog are busy: hubby’s working two jobs, I’m teaching summer courses, and our newly inducted toddler is “ow”-ing and “ock-a-oodle-oo”-ing her way through life. Right now, she’s fighting resuming the nap she started in the car (lucky me). So, what does this have to do with the blog? I’ll leave you with our daughter’s new horse, just after she arrived at the farm last month. Meet Athena:. You are commen...

Men's Garden Club of Albany. I always grow Waltham butternut squash because the yields are substantial, the fruits quite large, and it is very resistant to the evil stem borer. Some years I also grow a couple of vines worth of spagetti squash, but don't expect it to keep very well. Some folks like other varieties such as Hubbard or acorn, but for storage and taste, I've never found an equal to butternut. In the space where the vines will be growing toward I plant garlic. Since garlic goes into the ga...
