Architectural Overload | Blogging @random
http://blog.gailkat.com/architectural-overload
A random walk through spacetime. Any first-time visitor to Barcelona is sure to be overwhelmed by its exuberant architecture, and I am no exception. It’s difficult to put the visual sensations into words, so rather than prattle on, let the images speak for themselves. Palau de la Música Catalana. Architect: Lluís Domènech i Montaner, built 1905-1908. Theater, Palau de la Musica Catalana. Mosaic detail, Palau de la Musica Catalana. Illuminated railing, Palau de la Musica Catalana. Casa Mila La Pedrera.
After the Wall | Blogging @random

A random walk through spacetime. In 1968 I took a short bus ride around East Berlin, which at that time was the Soviet sector, requiring traversal through Checkpoint Charlie. My recollection of that journey is one of stark, grey, blocky buildings with an absence of color or human activity. Stalinesque style, Karl-Marx-Allee. Old cameras, DDR Museum. On a more somber note, signs of a harsh existence remain visible. Bullet holes pockmark the facades of buildings that were not leveled during the 1940s.
The Languages of Languedoc | Blogging @random
http://blog.gailkat.com/the-languages-of-languedoc
A random walk through spacetime. The Languages of Languedoc. The region of southeast France known as Languedoc. Gets its name from. The Occitan language. Today, there is no single language called. Instead it’s a collection of dialects: Gascon, Languedocien, Limousin, Auvergnat, Provençal, and Vivaro-Alpine, making it a linguist’s delight (or nightmare). The Languedoc region of France. Using Perpignan as a base, I visited Collioure, Narbonne, and Carcassonne. Tots els éssers humans neixen lliures i iguals...
Bumbling into Berlin | Blogging @random
http://blog.gailkat.com/bumbling-into-berlin
A random walk through spacetime. My lovely friend Giorgio offered to meet me at the Berlin Tegel airport when I arrived from Barcelona. We had some hiccups along the way, documented by funny text messages as we struggled to find one another. Berlin has two airports. Schönefeld handles short haul budget flights; Tegel is mostly for flights with connections to international destinations. Can you guess what happened? 8221; and is crestfallen to discover that it’s way across town at the. July 5, 2015. On It&...

A random walk through spacetime. Too Late for Orthodontia. The little town of Collioure, France glitters on the Mediterranean coast. It’s a bit too picture perfect, and lends itself to postcard-pretty snapshots like the ones I was lulled into taking. This entry was posted in On the Road. June 9, 2015. The medieval fortress of Carcassonne. OK OK, so Carcassonne isn’t really a castle. It’s a fortified medieval town, but who are we to quibble? Witches Hat tower at Carcassonne. Without a Care | Blogging @random

A random walk through spacetime. Down the stairs to the club. Amidst all the hubbub, we stood silently. Giorgio was completely unrecognized and anonymous. 8220;How does it feel to be Mr. Incognito? 8221; I asked him. He laughed in delight. “I choose not to live in the past,” he told me later. Refuge for a king. Sans Souci: Without a Care. This entry was posted in On the Road. July 6, 2015. Take the A-Trane →. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Your email address will not be published. Take the A-Trane | Blogging @random
http://blog.gailkat.com/take-the-a-trane
A random walk through spacetime. With Quasimodo no longer reigning as the jazz mecca of Berlin, the A-Trane, a club operated by Giorgio’s good friend Sedal, may well deserve the title. As Giorgio once did, Sedal runs both the club and a restaurant, the JazzCafe. He often turns to the older master for advice, and seems to hold Giorgio in a certain degree of awe. Sedal and Giorgio at the JazzCafe. What’s for dinner? Live at the A-Trane. This entry was posted in On the Road. July 6, 2015.

A random walk through spacetime. Category Archives: On the Road. It’s (Still) Happening at the Zoo. In 1968 I was touring Western Europe with a group of American students. It was my first time outside the U.S. The tour group eventually arrived in Berlin, where Giorgio was our tour guide. That was a very happy occasion. In contrast, I became. All American Tourister luggage looks alike! It took 3 days for my stuff to get back to Copenhagen. To this day I have no desire to revisit Denmark. Fast forward four...
