Galley Head Birding

Friday, June 12, 2015. News of a calling corncrake. On Galley Head on Wednesday evening was very exciting - after a time extension deal was struck for minecraft enthusiasts, I was allowed to drag them out to hear it. Forgot how loud they can be! This was my first at Galley, and in Ireland, but "heard only" patch tickage was the only option due to the habitat. Would be great if it hangs on! Earlier that evening we'd done some more twitching, this time to see a striped hawkmoth. Tuesday, April 28, 2015.

Galley Head Birding: February 2015

http://www.galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 15, 2015. A few more photos from Ross. Had another hour with the camera at Ross on Saturday. The state of tide and the light were quite different from the previous week, but I managed to find plenty to snap at. Here are the "best" efforts. I feel like Jono! Labels: big lens barry. Blurred and on the huh. Saturday, February 7, 2015. Mostly off-patch "record shots". Robin in the garden. Black-tailed Godwit at Ross. Black-headed Gull at Ross. Labels: big lens barry. Blurred and on the huh.

Galley Head Birding: May 2014

http://www.galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, May 31, 2014. With Galley really not being very good lately, despite regular checking for bee-eaters and orioles and the like, its fortunate that some good stuff has been turning up close by. Out of the blue a couple of nights ago news broke of a fine drake blue-winged teal. At the Cul-de-Sac pool, near Clonakilty. Wowzers. An Irish tick no less. And it was too - took me about 10 mins to get there and we had it skulking in the reeds round the back going to roost - Excellent! And a couple more.

Galley Head Birding: December 2014

http://www.galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Friday, December 12, 2014. Imagine my surprise today whilst scanning around the lake with the scope for stock dove. And other patch gank that i still need for the year, when I noticed these fellas feeding in amongst the oiks. Yes, indeedy, a fine brace of ruff. Which is my first record at Galley for ages - at least five years I think - will need to unearth the old spreadsheets. A welcome sight for sure! Tuesday, December 2, 2014. The first and last time I claimed pintail. Er, its the duck on the right.

Galley Head Birding: hammer time

http://www.galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2015/04/hammer-time.html

Monday, April 20, 2015. The first few years of stomping round Galley revealed that yellowhammers. Were mucho scarce in these parts, with only one or two sightings a year. In recent times, birds have been hanging around in winter, and, during the last year of the bird atlas, one male was even singing for most of the summer. In the last two years, there have been two to three pairs breeding, and hopefully numbers will increase again this season. Here's a nice male I got quite close to this morning.

Galley Head Birding: ears and hammers

http://www.galleyheadbirding.blogspot.com/2015/04/ears-and-hammers.html

Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Not been an awful lot of variety going through Galley of late. Did stumble across a few wheatears the other morning - the first photo opportunity I've had this spring. A few were bathing in the recently refreshed puddles down the top lane. Couldn't resist another go at the showy male yellowhammer. Labels: big lens barry. Blurred and on the huh. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Buzzard and Continental Cormorant, Tralee. The magic Autumn four. And a couple more.

Patch Birding Ireland: Blacksod

http://patchbirdingireland.blogspot.com/p/blacksod.html

The Patchwork Challenge Irish Minileague Blog. Blacksod, The Mullet, Co. Mayo by Dave Suddaby. 8217; I was up for it! So, and with little thought, I decided that I would just ‘stick-the-pin’ in the map, centred on the garden and draw a 1.5km radius around! With a little re-gigging I was then left with a ‘patch’ that consists mainly of rock-strewn Tarmon Hill …. Oh dear, maybe I should have gone ‘long and thin’ with the aim of taking in more habitat? So what have I got to work with? Top of the garden.

Wanstead Birder: July 2015

http://www.wansteadbirder.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

Latterly mostly about travel. Friday, 24 July 2015. So what's been going on? Obviously there is never a dull moment at Chateau L, but there's not a lot to tell. This week however has been punctuated by two momentous twitches. Well, one momentous, one semi-pleasing. The first was a Green Sandpiper. On the deck. Although it was my 5th Green Sand. Please tell us it is not so? And if it is, please make sure to release some extra-special waders (or ducks) from your magic satchel before you go! If an instituti...

Patch Birding Ireland: Galley Head

http://patchbirdingireland.blogspot.com/p/galley-head.html

The Patchwork Challenge Irish Minileague Blog. Galley Head, Co. Cork by Colin Barton. Hidden away down in County Cork in south-west Ireland, Galley Head is a grand spot altogether! And Cory’s Shearwaters. In some years. I’ve been lucky enough to see four Fea’s-type Petrel’s. Go by off Galley too, and there really is no better adrenalin rush! God knows what has been missed in there though! Looking down into Dirk - American thrush anyone? And probably best find of all, Black-headed Bunting. Are pretty much...

Patch Birding Ireland: Brownstown Head

http://patchbirdingireland.blogspot.com/p/brownstown-head.html

The Patchwork Challenge Irish Minileague Blog. Brownstown Head, Co. Waterford by Paul M. Walsh. Brownstown Head forms the SE corner of Tramore Bay, in east Co Waterford, and though it doesn’t project as dramatically as some south-coast headlands (notably Hook Head, Co Wexford, 11 km east), it’s certainly produced the goods over the years. Up to the mid 1970s, Brownstown was best known for having produced old records of Sociable Plover. And, I like to think, Great Auk. And some large Sooty. A major dip in...

Wanstead Birder: Update

http://www.wansteadbirder.com/2015/07/update.html

Latterly mostly about travel. Sunday, 5 July 2015. A brief summary of the last month would be:. A quick trip to Poland to find Nutcracker. Geting camera fixed after trip to Poland. Desperate processing of USA photos. Doing not a lot at home. Working like a dog (a sad constant). In connection with the above, being uncomfortably hot on the tube. The birding has been dull of course, and whilst I did manage to sneak out for the long-staying Hudsonian Whimbrel. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). 115 - - -.
