Garden Ally: October 2013

http://gardenally.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

Wednesday, October 23, 2013. Hurry Up and Wait. Those wildflowers won't plant themselves. Huh? We're in prime wildflower planting season here in Central Texas. There's a very brief window for planting in the fall. The optimal time is in the late part of October, but any time in October through mid-November will work. In the picture below, the path separates the meadow into 2 parts. In the space to the left of the path, I plan to grow. Clumping native grasses and wildflowers. The berm will allow me. While...

Garden Ally: December 2013

http://gardenally.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Sunday, December 8, 2013. In January of 2012, we received 5 inches of rainfall in a matter of a couple of hours. The rain fell in the early morning hours, but even in the dark we could see that something was very wrong. We had recently laid down 12 yards of mulch and the timing could not have been worse. The mulch had not had time to settle and floated off to our fence line creating a barrier which caused the water to back up instead of draining away. We decided it was time to raise the bridge. We pr...

Garden Ally: June 2014

http://gardenally.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 9, 2014. Highlights from the Pond Tour 2014. S1 David and Barbara. I love, love, love this place. I've been to this pond before. Whenever I visit, I always feel like I'm in good hands. The homeowners are super friendly and really seem to enjoy talking to their tour visitors. Yes, that's me waving. With all the mirrors, I couldn't seem to get a good picture without something reflected, so I decided to embrace the moment. Hello world! Look at this awesome mosaic toilet water feature! This stre...

Tuesday, December 2, 2014. Cloudy Day Tomato Soup. It's hard to believe just two days ago I was wearing shorts. Today it's 42 degrees and I'm freezing my buns off. I'll say this: Texas winters are never boring. We'll be back in the 70's by Thursday, so I'm not complaining. Sometimes I think it gets cold in Texas just so we can all have an excuse to pull out our favorite sweater, make some soup, and reminisce about summer (i.e. complain about winter). Yes, summer. Remember those great tomatoes? 9 frozen t...

Garden Ally: One Tomato, Two Tomato

http://gardenally.blogspot.com/2015/06/one-tomato-two-tomato.html

Wednesday, June 17, 2015. One Tomato, Two Tomato. One tomato, two tomato, three tomato four. the Sun City Organic Gardeners sure know how to grow some tomatoes! From the moment my group entered the gate with member gardener, Richard Bucho, we couldn't stop oohing and aahing over all the tomatoes. Tomatoes are certainly king of the summer garden. Just look at these beauties! All of this swooning over garden fresh tomatoes caused me to get a little ahead of myself. Let me start at the beginning. A one time...

Lisa's Landscape & Design. Diams; Leave a comment. Mulch is a very undervalued commodity in our garden space. This is one of those area’s where I seem to get the most resistance. You will hear me say, 4″to 6″ over and over again as I speak about gardening. There is a very valuable reason for this. I have spoken about compost. Hill ...

Football — Touring the USA. Farm to Table in Austin, TX. Posts Tagged ‘Vegetable Gardening’. Spaghetti Squash with Tomatillo Sauce. On July 1, 2015 2 Comments. Especially during the summer, I let the garden inspire me on what’s for dinner. Tonight’s combination was spaghetti squash, tomatillos, jalapeños, onion, and tomatoes. I started by cutting the squash in half, and placed it upside down in about 1/2 in of water. I cooked it at 350 for about 40 minutes. I could open a food truck with those. I was in ...

Tuesday, July 12, 2016. West Texas Wild Things. In the vastness of the Davis Mountains, there is beauty in a landscape where the brightest colors come from the blueness of the sky. At first glance, there doesn't appear to be much going on in the landscape. At 6,000 feet, the Davis Mountains are the high dessert of Texas. I saw clusters of cholla cactus blooming here and there until we took the scenic loop drive through the mountains, then there were forests of cholla blooming for as far as the eye could ...

Thoughts from the Garden/Blog. Health is more than the absence of illness. It’s the active state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being. We create sacred space when we dedicate our garden to not only the growth of plants but our own inner growth, as well. The garden connects us to the natural world and we cultivate spirit as we cultivate our garden. Sacred space for relaxation, meditation and rejuvenation.
