Garden Briefs

Tuesday, August 02, 2011. When The Government Regulates Your Garden. OAK PARK, DETROIT. Jeff Gillman and Eric Heberlig have written a sweetly provocative book, “How the Government Got in Your Backyard,” about the ways officialdom dictates what we can and cannot do in our gardens. If the authors wanted to write a sequel, Julie Bass could suggest the title: “How the Government Got in Your Front Yard.”. Does government belong in our gardens? But there are times when government might go too far. The popular ...

Thursday, April 07, 2011. Bolivia To Make Compost From Illegal Coca. As a stimulant in humans its properties are well known. Less well documented are the powers of the coca leaf to perk up the average plant. But now the authorities in Bolivia are experimenting with turning illegal coca harvests into organic fertilizer, and they say the results look promising. Miguel Callisaya, head of the project, claims the coca leaves, when mixed with household rubbish, tree leaves and chicken manure, are the best in w...

Friday, July 03, 2009. CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE. Tomato plants have been removed from stores in half a dozen states as a destructive and infectious plant disease makes its earliest and most widespread appearance ever in the eastern United States. Meg McGrath, professor of plant pathology at Cornell University, calls late blight "worse than the Bubonic Plague for plants.". Tomato plants have been removed from Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Lowe's and Kmart stores in all six New England states, plus New York. Lat...

Thursday, October 08, 2009. Gardeners Trade Grass For Fruit And Vegetables. Karin Fields of Fort Lauderdale is enthusiastic about the potential of her yard. She's not going for a fluffy, lush lawn. At least not in the usual sense. Instead, she's happily swapping out sections of grass for artichokes, broccoli and onions. With established vegetable gardens already tucked in back of her house, Fields is adding fresh plantings in the front yard - perfectly visible from the street. While much of her land prod...

Garden Briefs: A Gift Of Fresh Produce In These Boxes

http://www.gardenbriefs.blogspot.com/2010/12/gift-of-fresh-produce-in-these-boxes.html

Friday, December 10, 2010. A Gift Of Fresh Produce In These Boxes. And now for something completely different — a gift that truly keeps on giving. It comes in a box but has no ribbons. Unlike a new puppy, it takes care of itself. It isn't Godiva chocolates, but it's definitely edible. So, what is this unique and delicious Christmas gift that you can give away or give to yourself? Every Friday at Blick there was a company barbecue on the rooftop. Mike always made the salads from the 70 boxes of garden...

Garden Briefs: Sustainable Settings Can't Compost Way Out Of Toilet Issue

http://www.gardenbriefs.blogspot.com/2010/12/sustainable-settings-cant-compost-way.html

Thursday, December 09, 2010. Sustainable Settings Can't Compost Way Out Of Toilet Issue. Sustainable toilets at Sustainable Settings have ironically thrown a wrench into the farm's attempt to comply with health-code requirements. Brook Le Van, executive director of Sustainable Settings, thought installing composting toilets at the farm and learning center outside of Carbondale would be sufficient to satisfy Pitkin County's requirement for restroom facilities. That has not quite been the case. The Sustain...

City Organic Gardener: January 2008

http://cityorganicgardener.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 25, 2008. I've read about Lasagna gardening for years. I'm seeing even more about it lately with the growing interest in Sustainable Gardening. A lot of people are now turning their whole yards into vegetable gardens, so with this method they can get rid of all of the grass and weeds in one shot. Lastly I put about 5 cubic feet of bagged compost and watered that. The idea really is to get what ever you can locally and for free. Posted by Dirt Guy : 9:32 AM 0 Comments. Thursday June 9, 2011.

City Organic Gardener: Too Many Plants In One Pot

http://cityorganicgardener.blogspot.com/2011/05/too-many-plants-in-one-pot.html

Saturday, May 21, 2011. Too Many Plants In One Pot. This year all of the transplants that I have put in the garden I have had to buy. I would much rather start my own plants from seed, but that never happened this year. The problem with buying from garden centers is that they just don't have the selection and many times the plants just don't look good. There were six plants in here and I have two in the ground so far. Hope to get the rest planted this week. Posted by Dirt Guy : 10:03 AM. 5 - Silver Queen.

City Organic Gardener: January 2007

http://cityorganicgardener.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 20, 2007. Say Goodbye To The Tomatoes. Well two nights of frost finally did in the last of my summer crops. 12 tomato plants, 1 cucumber and 2 eggplant. The cucumber should never have been around at this time of year anyway. It only had one cucumber on it, but boy it would have been nice to harvest just that one during the winter. Next year I'll try covering the plants when there is the chance of frost to try to keep them a little longer. I dread having to use store bought now.

City Organic Gardener: Lawn Repair

http://cityorganicgardener.blogspot.com/2011/06/lawn-in-this-yard-really-went-to-trash.html

Wednesday, June 8, 2011. The lawn in this yard really went to trash at the end of last year because of the two dogs that were here. The result was that there were more weeds than Bermuda grass. I have been pulling out the weeds in small sections at a time and with water the grass is coming back. In some of the areas after I pulled out the weeds I covered it with steer manure. Those areas of course responded much better. Posted by Dirt Guy : 9:50 AM. Comments: Post a Comment. Subscribe to Posts [ Atom.

City Organic Gardener: November 2006

http://cityorganicgardener.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 27, 2006. I have to admit that this is the first time that I have had tomatoes fresh from the garden as we go into December. Now these are not tomato plants that happen to have hung on from the summer, but plants that are just now coming into their prime. I have four different varieties that I am trying out. Jetsetter. Glacier, Manitoba and Taxi. These varieties and other are able to set blossoms even when the temperate hits 40. Since the area I'm in almost. The next tomatoes that these ...

City Organic Gardener: June 2007

http://cityorganicgardener.blogspot.com/2007_06_01_archive.html

Wednesday, June 6, 2007. Tomato season is back and not having good tomato cages is always a problem. This plant (Red Beefsteak) was getting big so I put a stake a few feet behind it and tied it to the cage thinking I would be taking care of the problem before it started. Everything looked good and the plant kept growing fine. Then of course it still fell twisting the cage with it. Well then I had to get another stake and drive it in the ground from the other angle and tie that off. Garden Sites To Look At.

City Organic Gardener: April 2007

http://cityorganicgardener.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, April 26, 2007. This bed of Spinach (Reddy Hybrid) has gone nuts and is way more than I can ever use. This is the third variety of Spinach that I have tried, the others being Bloomsdale and Correnta. Those two varieties I like for both salads and stir fry. Reddy Hybrid has a much thinner leaf which doesn't do quite as well in a stir fry. In a salad by itself I just don't think there is enough taste there for me. Will I discard this variety? Another reason this Spinach has to be cut down is beca...

City Organic Gardener: February 2007

http://cityorganicgardener.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html

Sunday, February 18, 2007. For the past 8 or 9 months I have been trying to start all of my vegetables by seed. Not only is there more personal satisfaction, but it gives me a better choice of verities than what you can pickup at the local nursery. Success with the seed program has just been ok. I was planting about 6 pots, or cups in my case each week. Now if all of those cups produced respectable transplants, 6 per week would be allot for a small track home garden. So now I have the full 216 cells plan...

City Organic Gardener: Done With This Snow Pea

http://cityorganicgardener.blogspot.com/2011/05/done-with-this-snow-pea.html

Thursday, May 19, 2011. Done With This Snow Pea. These snow peas never really did any good. I had planted four seeds around a 24" tomato cage just to try that out. Three of the seeds did come up so that was no problem. Later one of the plants started dying out so I cut that one out. All in all these two plants have so far only produced enough for three dinners for two. It has started turning all yellow now so no reason to keep it any longer. I can always use the tomato cage anyway. Garden Sites To Look At.
