Allotment Blog: Three sisters planting for allotments
http://blog.gardening-tools-direct.co.uk/2008/05/three-sisters-planting-for-allotments.html
Three sisters planting for allotments. Hmmm I can see how it might work somewhere closer to the equator, but here? I think that the wetter, cooler climate of the UK will cause the following:. 1 The beans will get very leafy and shade the squashes. 2 The corn will mature more slowly than the beans, meaning that the cobs also get shaded by the bean leaves and thus won’t ripen. 3 The squashes will be slow to ripen but will otherwise do fine (they are pretty indestructible). Has anybody out there tried it?

Allotment Blog: Greenhouse pollinating
http://blog.gardening-tools-direct.co.uk/2012/07/greenhouse-pollinating.html
So everything botanical wants to reproduce. Most plants need a partner to do this, but the dating agency (as it were) varies some plants use the air, some use insects, some prefer birds all that kind of biological stuff. Some plants do both sides of the deal themselves male and female flowers that self pollinate: corn and cucumbers, for example. Posted by The Allotment Blogger on Monday, July 2, 2012. Allotment Blog: Allotment windbreaks
http://blog.gardening-tools-direct.co.uk/2012/06/allotment-windbreaks.html
Today we have 28 mph winds on the allotment. The actual temperature (16 degrees) feels like 11 degrees. Plants exposed to such strong winds with low temperatures are likely to desiccate even if they don’t snap. The second plot had a brick wall to its west side and low pallet fences. Most of the time the wind issues were manageable, but when the wind came from the west, as it did but rarely, the brick wall created a wind funnel that hit the middle of our plot with devastating effects. Allotment tasks - February Pond. I got a phone call last night saying that Maurice is ready to install his new pond! Anyway, it is that time of year. We’ve been working on our home pond this month, and I notice that several of our allotment friends have been doing the annual maintenance on theirs. Posted by The Allotment Blogger on Tuesday, February 26, 2008. Really rotten allotment jobs in February. The worst job is turning over last year's potato bed. Husband and wife Sam and Sam Clark - owners of restaurant Moro - reveal recipes in their latest cookbook. Another suggestion is that when you have to trim artichoke plants, you can take the new leaves, peel them and fry them, apparently they taste like artichoke but look like a stick of celery. The Clarks hope the book will encourage people to grow and eat their own. Posted by The Allotment Blogger on Wednesday, January 30, 2008. Back to the slow cooker. What’s it got to do with allotments?
