These are African Irises and a Coontie. The African Irises look like they may be totally destroyed, and the Coontie is harmed but I am not sure how badly. Since moving here, I loved the look of Agapanthus but was not able to grow them until I tried some against the front wall in a sheltered "L" shaped place. They love that spot, as this photo of the bloom shows. Shown here is the Daylily MARY GUENTHER. This is a recent arrival here, and I hope it does well for me. The colors are so bright. This flower dates back to 1942.

Gardening by trowel and error. Other People’s Gardens: Crook Hall. August 15, 2015. We have had a brief but enjoyable trip to Durham to see my brother and his family, and while there we took the opportunity to visit Crook Hall. This is a little haven near the busy city centre, a medieval hall and later house with spectacular gardens. There was a bit of rain while we were there but we managed to avoid the worst of it!
