September 22, 2013. Gardening by the Book. Gardening by the Book. My sister Phyllis is the true chef in the family. Still, I always scout for new recipes, like Barbara’s vegetable stew that utilize ingredients locally grown or raised. Thus, I was delighted to stumble upon a new cookbook that does just that and, as a bonus, features local author, Elise Richer, and local illustrator, Teresa Lagrange. That book is. What also attracted me to the cookbook are the beautiful, brightly colored illustrations....

October 31, 2010. The end of October…hard to believe! Fall is clean up time and time to prepare pots/containers and beds for next spring. Here fall has taken its time; fortunate for me. I had a lot of exterior painting to do that took up both time and energy normally available for gardening, so everything in the garden has been late…late tomatoes and strawberries, but also late cleanup and preparation. February 22, 2013. And then what to do is…. When all the babies have been placed in their permanent homes, clean up the frame by adding a bag of composted cow manure and a scattering of all-purpose fertilizer. Now with lid up use as a direct seedbed for extra lettuce or other leafy crops. A cold frame can be a wood box with a recycled window top, a hay bale enclosure covered with clear plastic or a brick or concrete block square covered with corrugated fiberglass. If building one, start with finding ...

March 24, 2013. This article is dedicated to my mother, a lover of all things from the earth,. Whom early in March, I returned to the soil. I transferred the dishes of pebbles on which each plant had rested into the house. I filled these with water in hopes the humidity it produced would counter balance our wood stove's dry heat. Every week, I poured a quarter cup - no more! I followed the same routin for the orchid in my back foyer. It too, responded by sending up air roots and more: a stalk, filled...

BEFORE and AFTER PHOTOS. CALIFORNIA, ITS TIME TO LOSE THE LAWN. I am a Californian, and feel fortunate to live in this amazing place. I respect its bounty and its limitations. And as a gardener, though Id love to have plentiful water, I am happy to work with Mother Nature and go water wise in this prolonged drought. Besides, Id rather have flowers than lawn anyway! And the birds and bees are happy.). Labels: drought tolerant design. Drought tolerant front yard. DROUGHT TOLERANT COTTAGE GARDENS. I've bee...

And thank you for coming to my website. I have created garden. For several reasons. I hope that gardeners can use my site to access great horticultural information specific to their climate.
