The collected thoughts of a workplace consultant. Skip to primary content. The #Absurdity of #Twitter. June 3, 2013. Despite the hype and inescapable omniscience of social media, perhaps like me, your not entirely convinced of the merits of using Twitter; the literary equivalent of having chronic dysentery, which you feel duty bound and compelled to enjoy. How often have any of us read or heard some idiot say I’m really passionate about workplace design, or people or HR or FM. Oh seriously! 8220;Quiet sp...

The one without the battenberg tattoo. The one with the golden skirts →. November 28, 2013 · 6:18 pm. The one with the quality job. I’m not sure who first said “better, faster, cheaper – pick any two” but it does seem to be enduringly true. I was recently invited to be part of a judging panel on the “In-House Recruitment Awards” (thanks Mark and Simon) and was assigned a few categories to do the initial judging prior to a. What made me slightly nervous in reading the award entries that success (and the s...

The one with the code red. The one with the quality job →. November 6, 2013 · 7:15 am. The one without the battenberg tattoo. That said sometimes giving people what they don’t know they yet need (think Henry Ford quote about faster horses) is worth the time, effort, disruption, risk and leadership required to steer the tanker and maybe just maybe the resistance is nothing to do with the expected outcome and more about the fear of change that a person inevitably feels. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

The one with the peer’s pressure. January 31, 2014 · 6:59 am. The one in defence of appraisal. Over the past few weeks I’ve read a few things (and sorry I can’t find all the links) slating the idea of performance review or appraisal – whatever you want to call it. I do remember a piece from the Harvard Business Review blogs where the Chief Human Resources Officer of Lear (you know, them what make the posh planes) rails against linking performance review to pay. Even high performers suffer, because when t...

Monthly Archives: June 2013. June 26, 2013 · 7:15 am. The one with the secret society. I must confess I wouldn’t want to be part of ‘the business’ because they are to blame for EVERYTHING. Anything and everything that people can’t or don’t want to do seems to be the fault of ‘the business’ so I can only think what a strange and dissociated bunch they must be…. Everyone in the organisation is part of ‘the business’? This can’t be true! Oh, it isn’t a secret society that no one can join? It may be that you...

A fine WordPress.com site. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. January 3, 2015. So to start where I intend to go on in a blog about film, music and food, let’s do a piece about a TV program. Featuring a largely unknown (to me at least) cast it was good to see Matt Frewer, better known as Max Headroom, almost unrecognizable in a hipster beard and shaved head, in a juicy role as the chief surgeon and Clive Owen in the lead as reliably dour and as grimly charismatic as ever.
