According to VMWare, they have made 3.5 much more sensitive to storage problems (? The cure is to patch the Dart Code on the NS so that it doesn’t panic on greater than 1 MB read requests. I agree that adding some additional security to the SMTP protocol is necessary in order to lower the amount of spam and attacks (Directory harvesting in particular), but I think we need to leave that to the MTA's themselves.
