Here We Are: The Service Learning Year: A Proposal
http://garyemiller.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-service-learning-year-proposal.html
Observations by Gary E. Miller. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. The Service Learning Year: A Proposal. The question of how we create community in a time when technology has made physical location irrelevant is an important issue for us and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. We are still in the very early stages of building a new society. Right now, it seems, many younger people are being left behind. Many lack a traditional family structure to guide them. Here is a thought:. State and National Parks.
Here We Are: New Edition of E-Learning Definitions
http://garyemiller.blogspot.com/2015/05/new-edition-of-e-learning-definitions.html
Observations by Gary E. Miller. Saturday, May 30, 2015. New Edition of E-Learning Definitions. For the past few years, Frank Mayadas and I have worked to refine a set of definitions within the online learning field. This year, John Sener joined the team, and we have come up with a new edition of the definitions. John, Frank, and Karen Pederson of OLC will have a session about definitions at the fall OLC conference. Meanwhile, here is the latest version:. Definitions of E-Learning Courses and Programs.
Here We Are: September 2014
http://garyemiller.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Observations by Gary E. Miller. Friday, September 26, 2014. Public Media in a Multi-Platform Environment. The October 2014 issue of Harper’s Magazine. Includes an article by Eugenia Williamson, “PBS Self-Destructs”. That, for those of us who have a history with public broadcasting and value its role, is troublesome. Williamson argues that funding sources have always been a cause for tension and, in some cases, compromise in production and scheduling decisions. 8220; . . . the present state of...Clearly, ...
Here We Are: June 2015
http://garyemiller.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Observations by Gary E. Miller. Saturday, June 20, 2015. Time to Stop the Violence. We need to act, though. Here are a few small steps that might help reduce violence, if not racism itself:. 2 One reason that citizens' voices are not heard in the debate over gun control is that the gun manufacturers have put so much money into the political process. Let's stop corporate funding of our elections and instead use public funding to ensure that all candidates have equal access to the election process. NOTE: S...
Here We Are: August 2015
http://garyemiller.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Observations by Gary E. Miller. Thursday, August 27, 2015. Higher Education: Both a Private and a Public Good. In the September 2015 issue of Harper’s Magazine,. William Deresiewicz writes about “How college sold its soul to the market.”. Instead, he writes, American colleges and universities have become focused on several buzzwords:. Leadership, service, and creativity—things, notes Deresiewicz, which have little to do with thinking or learning. The 1828 report of the Yale College faculty defended the l...

Observations: The Trump Card
http://gemiller7.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-trump-card.html
By Gary E. Miller. Tuesday, July 28, 2015. I worry about Donald Trump. While some commentators have noted that his popularity is with a particular wing of the conservative movement—working class white people who are among the greatest victims of the social change that, ironically, is one of the byproducts of the unrestricted capitalism of Trump and his fellow greed-worshipers—he is a media darling at the moment. Whether his ideas have value or not, he is getting incredible airtime on the news channels.
Observations: November 2013
http://gemiller7.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
By Gary E. Miller. Tuesday, November 5, 2013. Today is election day—an off-year election in which we will vote for local offices- school board members, the mayor, members of the borough council—and for a few regional and statewide positions, from district attorney to state supreme court judge. These are elections that help define our sense of community. I live in State College, PA. One assumes it would be a relatively safe Democratic district. However, the townships that surround State College—wher...
Observations: President Obama's Four-Pronged Foreign Policy
http://gemiller7.blogspot.com/2014/06/president-obamas-four-pronged-foreign.html
By Gary E. Miller. Tuesday, June 3, 2014. President Obama's Four-Pronged Foreign Policy. Last week, President Obama used a commencement address at West Point to summarize his administration’s approach to foreign policy issues. He told the future military leaders, “The question we face . . . is not whether America will lead but how we will lead, not just to secure our peace and prosperity but also to extend peace and prosperity around the globe.”. President Obama described three aspects of foreign policy:.
Observations: February 2014
http://gemiller7.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
By Gary E. Miller. Wednesday, February 26, 2014. Leonard Pittts, Jr. and Arizona. Leonard Pitts Jr.: Boycott Arizona Leonard Pitts Jr. CentreDaily.com. Leonard Pitts, Jr., has written what I think is an important column about the pending Arizona law that would allow people to discriminate based on their religious beliefs. This is not a freedom of religion issue, as much as the Arizona legislature wants to call it that. It is a license for intolerance. Sunday, February 9, 2014. Tonight marks the 50. But, ...
Observations: January 2014
http://gemiller7.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
By Gary E. Miller. Tuesday, January 21, 2014. National Service and the Declaration of Independence. EJ Dionne Jr.: A call for national service - The Washington Post. In this opinion piece, published in the Post. S July 4 issue, Dionne reminds us that the founding vision of the United States is of a community. The August 2013 issue of Harper's. Includes a transcript of a speech given by Mark Kingwell in which he states:. The amazing thing is that millions of Americans send that message every day. The myth...
Observations: Let the Mystery Be?
http://gemiller7.blogspot.com/2014/08/let-mystery-be.html
By Gary E. Miller. Saturday, August 16, 2014. Let the Mystery Be? Iris Dement sings that, while everyone wants to know where we came from and where we are going, she is happy to “let the mystery be.”. I tend to agree with her at one level, but at another I am just too curious, I guess. I am at an age where the curiosity is becoming more immediate. It is one thing to wonder in June what Santa Claus will bring; it is another to be listening for reindeer hooves on Christmas Eve! Perhaps this life of ours is...

Observations: April 2014
http://gemiller7.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
By Gary E. Miller. Wednesday, April 30, 2014. It has been hard not to notice, over the past few weeks, the incredible amount of energy—and human resources—that CNN has invested in the disappearance of Malaysia Flight 307. Their coverage of other tragedies pales by comparison. This was brought home today when a six-year-old boy brought a 45mm handgun to school in the same district where my grandson goes to kindergarten. How have the families of the murdered children fared in the 18 months since Sandy Hook?
Observations: "You've Got Mail" -- A Boomer Classic
http://gemiller7.blogspot.com/2014/07/youve-got-mail-boomer-classic.html
By Gary E. Miller. Tuesday, July 22, 2014. You've Got Mail" - A Boomer Classic. The other night I was treated to a surprise airing of what I suspect is my favorite movie, You’ve Got Mail. That same day, I had been to Schlow Library here in State College and had borrowed Delia Ephron’s book, SisterMotherHusbandDog,. Which begins with a chapter about her sister, Nora Ephron, who directed the film and co-wrote it with Delia. Jean Stapleton, who played Edith Bunker on All in the Family,. You’ve Got Mail.
Observations: August 2014
http://gemiller7.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
By Gary E. Miller. Thursday, August 21, 2014. A Community Built from Steel: The Legacy of Frank and Julia Buhl. The Shenango Valley sits on the western edge of Pennsylvania, where the Shenango River flows southward toward the Ohio. It includes 8 communities in Pennsylvania and, on the valley’s western heights, in Ohio. Nestled in the river valley is the city of Sharon. At the top of the east hill is Hermitage. When I was a boy, it was just Hickory Township. Sharon was a mill town. Today, I am amazed.
