Wednesday, November 24, 2004. I Am Too Far Away And I Am Right There And I Am Nowhere. My dad called today. He was in the hospital a couple of days ago. His hip went out on him. I guess when you're seventy that kind of thing happens. He was at home when he called his doctor. His doctor told him to get a family member to bring him over. Dad takes care of everyone there. It is what he does. What he has always done. He is what a man is: dependable, generous, solid. I want to be able to give my father a ride.

Wednesday, January 14, 2004. Thick Skulls Are In The Genes. The other day, my son came in from playing in the backyard. A few hours later he matter-of-factly told the Queen Mother, I fell on my head. Really, she said. When did you do that? In the backyard. I was hanging from the monkey bars. Said bars are horizontal bars, the kind you cross hand over hand, which stand about 6 feet high. The boy is two-foot and a half and a bit. How did that happen? Asked the Queen Mother. He said as he bounced off to play.

Wednesday, February 25, 2004. 5 am by the red digital beast beside my bed. I hear the sound of soft weeping. Tone rising. I close my eyes to it. My ears try to follow their lead. She bolts up and out. One smooth, determined motion toward the nightmare that's been had or the flu that's developed. My ears are open again. They hear soft, mother words. "What's wrong?
