Everything and Anything about the Ocean, Simply. Saturday, May 17, 2014. Another unique characteristic of elephant seals. Recently we talked about the southern elephant seal and how it could dive deep in the ocean to find food and help collect data for oceanographers. That scientists from Scripps found that the level of carbon monoxide (CO) in northern elephant seals blood was 10% higher than in non-smoking humans (but about equivalent to that of a heavy smoker). It is then a good time to reflect on the successes and challenges of this field campaign. Yes, challenges rather than failures. Because in Science just as in life, “failures” are a challenge to make things better. Photo by Jeff Crews. It is debatable whether measuring profiles of temperature, salinity, turbidity, and turbulence is cooler...

Everything and Anything about the Ocean, Simply. Monday, February 17, 2014. Oceanographic creativity at its best. I love many things about this series of photos. Other than the obvious hilarity of Miley riding various oceanographic equipments or marine animals, I hope some of these pictures will make it to some of her fans, and that some of them will be curious about what she is on top of, and maybe, just maybe, spark a new interest that might turn into a passion, and a career. Are securing the CTD with ...
