안동 경일산업사 - 위기를 기회로 삼아 40년을 이어온 제재소. 경상북도 안동시 용상동 1078-34. 한국전쟁이 끝나자 폐허가 된 조국강산을 재건해야 했기 때문에 제재소의 역할은 지대했다. 그러다가516이 일어나 새로운 정권이 들어서고 전국에 벌목이 금지되었지만 일제강점기에 이미 금강송은 거의 사라진 후였다. 그렇지만 경제 개발에 힘입어 여전히 제재소가 번창했다. 그 후, 나라는 차츰 안정을 찾아가고, 경제가 발전되면서 목재보다는 콘크리트, 시멘트가 그 역할을 대신했다. 그와 더불어 제재소도 사양길로 접어들면서 하나씩 문을 닫기 시작했다. 개개인 생활이 차츰 안정되고, 생활수준이 향상되면서 사람들은 건강에 눈을 돌리기 시작했다. 또한 개발 논리에 밀려 홀대를 받았던 전통문화의 중요성이 부각되면서 우리 전통 문화재와 한옥 건축의 우수성이 재평가되면서 제재소도 조금씩 살아나게 되었다. 대표의 말처럼 그의 인생은 파란만장했다. 권 대표 부부가 살던 안동 시내 집은 가업을 승계한 막내아들에게 물려주고, ...

영주 진흥제재소 - 40년을 한자리에서 지켜온. 경상북도 영주시 상망동 246-26. 남성학 대표의 고향은 봉화군 봉성면이다. 해방이 막 되고 이듬해 태어났다. 그리고 어린 시절 한국전쟁을 겪었고, 보릿고개를 힘겹게 넘겼다. 그 후 새마을운동, 민주화운동 등 격동의 시대를 겪어왔지만 단 한 번도 다른 길을 가보지 않았다. 오로지 한 길만 고집했으며, 한 우물만 팠다. 벌써 10년 전 일이었다. 그리고 80년대 중반 서울에서 부동산업을 하던 동생부부를 설득해 함께 꾸려가고 있다. 제재소 옆 새롭게 건물을 지어 동생 명의로 건재 상사를 만들어 사업장을 꾸려가게 했다. 지금 이곳에는 남성학 대표이외에 부인과 동생부부, 아들과 함께 이끌어가고 있는 중이다.

영주 대성임업(주) - 임업계 최초 '동탑산업훈장'에 빛나는. 경상북도 영주시 하망 3동 330-21. 또 한 명의 독림가 '대성임업' 최병주 회장. 60년대 우리나라는 전국 황폐해진 산에 나무를 심고 보호하여 초목을 무성하게 하자는 ‘산림녹화사업’과 함께 벌목산업이 한창 유행을 했다. 벌목업을 하면서 조림사업을 병행해야 했다. 이곳 경상북도 영주시 하망리에 또 한 명의 법인 독림가가 있다. 그가 바로 ‘대성임업’을 운영하고 있는 최병주(86세) 회장이다. ‘모범 독림가’나 ‘법인 독림가’는 도지사가 추천하여 산림청장이 인증하는 특수한 제도다. 1966년부터 한길을 걸어온 '대성임업 주식회사'.
