Random musings and ideas. Tuesday, February 3, 2015. Installing SABnzbd in Docker on OMV, Part 2. Continued from Part 1. I'm going to assume you've read (or skimmed) through part 1 of this guide, and you have a Dockerfile prepared. In order to build an image off this Dockerfile, run the following command;. Sudo docker build -t sabnzbd. If you build more images, using the same debian:wheezy image, you won't need to download this image again. The Docker daemon is smart enough to use the existing image.

Random musings and ideas. Wednesday, May 21, 2014. I spent a number of years living with my documents, music, photos and various files scattered across various computers and different external backup drives. So when I shifted everything to a central NAS it was something of a revelation. It's pretty darned convenient having access to all the same files, no matter which computer or mobile device you use. I also found that consolidated stuff allowed me to save on hard drive space. Why RAID is not a backup.

Random musings and ideas. Wednesday, June 3, 2015. Hiding Services Behind HAProxy. This is an update to the article here. On hiding services behind Apache. HAProxy is a piece of software designed to perform load-balancing and proxying. It has a couple of neat features. It's small, lightweight and very efficient. And unlike Apache (or Nginx), HAProxy is not just limited to redirecting HTTP traffic, but also works with other protocols in the TCP stack. Now let's start playing with possible configurations.

Random musings and ideas. Sunday, July 20, 2014. Hiding Services Behind Apache. Skip to the bottom of this post if you just want instructions. There are a couple of problems with port numbers. Secondly, running these services on different ports can cause headaches with firewalls. For the time being, I'm going to assume you are running your server in a hosted environment, OR you are hosting your server at home and have correctly set up port forwarding on your modem (and, are aware of the potential risks).

Random musings and ideas. Wednesday, January 21, 2015. Open Media Vault and Docker, Part 1. For the past couple of weeks, I've been playing around with Docker, which is rapidly gaining popularity as a way to deploy applications across a variety of different environments. What is it? Well, as best as I can understand, it basically provides a software interface to operating-system level virtualisation. What does that mean? But who cares what Docker is. What can it actually do. What's that cracking sound?

Random musings and ideas. Tuesday, January 31, 2017. Over the weekend, I made a number of changes to my NAS server hardware, and along the way decided to upgrade from Open Media Vault (which is based on Debian Wheezy), to something a bit more modern. This bought me to my first experience with systemd which was available in wheezy, but not installed by default. In Open Media Vault, each drive is mounted by UUID in the directory. On top of this, I pool some of my drives using aufs, which is also mounted in.
