The Generation Y Scientist

The Generation Y Scientist. Plunge from the Ivory Tower. Saturday, October 3, 2009. Why the science system is not sustainable. In Peter Lawrence's now famous PLoS article, Real Lives and White Lies in the Funding of Scientific Research. I turn to the harsh reality of economics that we, as scientists, need to recognise. Transversely, such a multi-talented individual could bring a perspective into the lab that could benefit those around him/her. I'm not saying that research must. Research leads to innovati...

The Generation Y Scientist: September 2009

http://www.gen-y-sci.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

The Generation Y Scientist. Plunge from the Ivory Tower. Friday, September 4, 2009. OK - I have a business, now what? You'll need a website. I know nothing about websites (other than how to surf the net), but there are easy ways to set up quality websites using free hosting and site building - for example, here's a good website. That uses Google Sites. This was set up by following the guidance from here. I don't even know what i want to do! Most people would advise you to have an idea before. The vast ma...

The Generation Y Scientist: Where have all the post docs gone?

http://www.gen-y-sci.blogspot.com/2009/08/where-have-all-post-docs-gone.html

The Generation Y Scientist. Plunge from the Ivory Tower. Thursday, August 20, 2009. Where have all the post docs gone? Will be employed at a research organisation 5 years after graduation. Of concern is that the PhD process is heavily weighted towards obtaining an academic position. This means that the academic training these students are receiving will not be sufficient on its own to prepare them for the workforce. So why won't these PhD students find employment in academia? Go overseas; or. By upskilli...

The Scientist NZ: SolarAid

http://thescientistnz.blogspot.com/2010/07/solaraid.html

July 15, 2010. The other day I came across a charity here in London that is doing some amazing work. They're called. And as their website suggests, they're working to combat two of the biggest threats facing humanity today -climate change, and global poverty. There are numerous efforts across the globe to make big $ from the next big thing in solar, wind, or biofuels. It is important not to forget how simple, cost effective cleantech solutions can make an immediate benefit to those that really need i...

The Scientist NZ: Phitek Systems

http://thescientistnz.blogspot.com/2009/02/phitek-systems.html

February 10, 2010. You may have heard of noise cancellation headphones that dramatically reduce ambient sound sources to create a more enjoyable listening experience. They are rather expensive, but if you have ever used a pair, you will know what I mean when I say they are absolutely incredible! These headphones work by sampling the ambient sounds sources, converting these into a digital signal which is then processed to create destructive interference, thus cancelling the ambient sound.

The Scientist NZ: Rakon

http://thescientistnz.blogspot.com/2010/02/rakon.html

February 3, 2010. GPS units work by locating four or more satelites, calulating the distance between the unit and each satelite, and then using this information to calculate its own position by a process called trilateration. This is done by timing how long a signal takes to travel between two points, which needs to be known very accurately. This is where Rakon comes in with their quartz crystal oscillators. With the explosion of handheld GPS devices (CAGR 18%) and the inclusion of GPS technology in many...

The Scientist NZ: Fuel from Algae

http://thescientistnz.blogspot.com/2009/08/fuel-from-algae.html

August 5, 2009. The other day I saw this article. In Scientific American. Exxon Mobil, one of the largest petrochemical companies in the world, have recently announced they are putting US$600 million into research on new biofuels from algae. 2nd generation biofuels, made from waste biomass, the stalks of wheat, corn, wood, and jatropha (the biofuel Air NZ used for its trial biofuel flight was made from jatropha) promise a more politically acceptable solution, because they are non-food crops and often gro...

The Scientist NZ: October 2009

http://thescientistnz.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

October 19, 2009. Scared of letting go? There was an interesting article. On Stuff.co.nz last week about Crown Research Institute AgResearch having to find work overseas in order to meet the NZ Government's demands for a 9% dividend - which has come under criticism from some. I agree with CEO, Andrew West - business is business, and I think this highlights what, in my opinion, is one of NZ's big problems - the inability to let ideas (and businesses) go. Jim Donovan talked about this. October 12, 2009.

Life hypothesis of a gen-y mum

One of the big changes that I can finally share is we're moving. Even if I did go back to work full time, I didn't want a massive mortgage hanging over our heads, in addition to the cost of raising a young family. Like I said prices of homes in the areas we did want to buy in had sky rocketed in the past two to three years. I love being challenged! So watch this space. I'll be sharing the journey with you all. The purchasing rules alone is slightly different in another state than Sydney. I'll...Since the...
