Geek Crafts
http://genegeek.ca/2014/11/geek-crafts
Are you a geek? I’ve been taking some time to create with my hands lately. I’ve always loved needlework – it speaks to my precision and obsessive nature – and you get to see progress. On those days where you feel like nothing is getting done (grad school or grant days, anyone? Those quilting and cross stitch projects where you can see what you accomplish can really help. I started making my own things because how many kittens and flowers can you really make? We have our own Etsy shop. Hello I'm Catherine...

chromosomes
http://genegeek.ca/category/medgen/chromosomes
Are you a geek? Chromosomes vs. chromatids. I’ve been writing up my talks and am surprised how long it has taken me to get through the material. For now, I thought I’d address some common questions: what is a chromosome vs. a sister chromatid? What n value do you use? Our DNA is pretty cool. We get half our DNA from our mom and half from our dad and we function best when we have two copies of each chromosome. Having too much or too little of each section of DNA can lead to disease. We will start talking ...

Are you a geek? Our 3D printed virus ornaments are ready! We are selling these ornaments. To raise money for science outreach. We have:. Last week, I shared our first few prints on Twitter and they were well received. We had plans to add glitter, but I learned that I should be nowhere near a spray can and that the viruses look better in their classic original print. How did these happen? A wonderful woman I work with, Jenny McQueen. Every virus ornament is going to come with a festive bit of information.
Illness hiatus
http://genegeek.ca/2015/01/illness-hiatus
Are you a geek? I’m making good use of the Canadian health care system and I’m not sure when I will get back to writing. The illness is related to my gallbladder removal. But there doesn’t seem to be a quick fix. If there are any fun or interesting lessons along the way – and I have the energy – I’ll share them! Please play nice. Cancel reply. Decided to switch to microblogging. Neither blogger or Twitter are right for me. Have relocated to Posterous- so far so sleek and simple. Perfect. Will be using Wordpress for future blogging though. A list of all the attributes I'm working on hangs on the wall; it's titled, "The Woman I Want to Be". But my walls are so cluttered with artwork, photos, aphorisms and commandments. There is something to the axiom, "live simply and love generously". Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions." - Dalai Lama. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Lagerstatten: May 2010

My mother was 'blessed' with naturally curly hair but the I didn't win the genetic (or epigenetic) lottery. Next week I'll be going to Chura in Downtown Vancouver to get my hair digitally permed. I'm pretty lucky to have manageable straight hair but I spent years longing for wavy hair. Finally I have the courage to go through with it. I'd really like to update this blogger template. I'll hopefully. Be missing in action for a short while to catch up on reading, work, sleep and this website. I've been stuc...
Lagerstatten: October 2010
http://vanlagerstatten.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html
Boy it's been chilly in Vancouver. Maybe I've grown accustomed to the nice warm summers we've been having but I thought I sensed a bit of Winter's nip in the air today. It's particularly disheartening when it's wet, cold and still dark out but it's already 8 am. Yet all is well when I get my early morning cup of hot cocoa! Generously sprinkled with cinnamon. It also takes some of the stress away probably because it's so very comforting. Watch K'Naan at Terry UBC here. Instructor and is much more. Apparen...
Lagerstatten: August 2010
http://vanlagerstatten.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
The Northern Capital of BC. I'm here in the "Northern Capital of BC": Prince George. I'll be staying on rez at UNBC until August 20th for work. Can't say it's my favourite place in the world but I'm slowly starting to see more of BC. Pookie, my favourite bear in the world (sorry Yogi), is always attached to my duffle bag. Been itching to travel some more but really can't afford the time or money at the moment. Sand, Surf, Wind and Waves; Tousled Hair and Braids. Almost 30 degrees in Vancouver today!
Lagerstatten: July 2010

Me and You and The Washing Machine. It was L's birthday over the weekend and she threw a BBQ-costume party. After food and charades, we strolled to the playground around the corner. How ridiculous we must have looked to be marching down the neighborhood, dressed up for no apparent reason as the runaway bride, paper bag princess, a life guard, a pirate, cupid and an 80's chick. We were so surprised to learn that Tibs doesn't know how to maneuver a swing. It was cute to watch her boyfriend teach her. Well ...

Observations of the spaces in between science, society, education and policy. A blog around the clock. Not exactly rocket science. Skulls in the Stars. The Finch and Pea. Through the looking glass. Why is it so hard to give up on hoping that facts speak for themselves? This is one of the opening descriptive passages of Gary Hustwit’s 2007 documentary. Which traces the meaning, history and importance of the near ubiquitous typeface. Think of a corporate brand that has a sleek minimal brand image? As a tea...

Function of a Rubber Duck. The key to survival: turtles. April 27, 2013. Did you know that turtles could (possibly) save your life? Observations of the Absurd, Obscure, Obtuse and Inane. Where dreams may go. April 29, 2015. Slices of life are not simple, uncomplicated stories. They contain real desperation and real hope, real tears and real relief, real villains and real heroes. One such hero is the brave lady who wrote this honest, painful, wounded account of a slice of life. It lets us all know we are not alone in our experiences, and there is comfort in that.
