The couple’s correspondence highlights what daily life at the time was like, both in Sycamore and on the battlefield, as they experienced it. Rosina wrote to Everell:. From her perspective, It does seem as though this old war would cease- over three years now since our flag was fired upon at Fort Sumpter then -three or six months was going to crush this rebellion -and it is not yet wiped out- I do believe I would be just the happiest woman in existence if this war would only close - or else you came home.

Will Dustin (AKA Willie, Bill). Soon after Dutton joined the 105th, another Sycamore resident soon arrived to meet the Regiment. This one, not as welcome, was General Daniel Dustin’s son, Will. A school friend of the boy, Turner G. Wing, later wrote:.

The Civil War (1861-1865). In 1861, Dutton joined the 13th Ilinois, a unit composed of many men eager to support the war. However, Dutton was forced to leave this regiment to recover from a serious illness. Later, he joined the 105th, known as a well-drilled, superbly trained and effective unit that helped the Union achieve victory. These men were part of Sherman’s March to the Sea. In all, Sycamore provided 307 men for the Civil War.
