There is no running water or electricity but we are used to that from Freetown and it’s amazing how easy it is to adapt to living without either. M&S diary: Monkey business

http://www.generocitydiary.blogspot.com/2007/02/monkey-business.html

Maro and simon's journey in sierra leone. Monday, February 05, 2007. What am I describing? My daily pains with the United Nations over here or the fun Maro and I had visiting a lovely chimpanzee sanctuary up in the hills behind Freetown? Is a video of our day for your amusement. And that UN business? In end-of-tether despair (and because it's not entirely their fault), this letter. Found it's way into the Guardian at the weekend. Posted by generocity at 4:29 AM. Maro and simon's journey in sierra leone. Thursday, August 17, 2006. Well, we're finally here! It was like a sprawling chapel, its colourful icons - the fishermen, the prostitutes, the orphans, came in and out of the light almost like a never-ending dream. On Tuesday, Alice, VSO's programme for HIV/governance picked us up with Lynda, the receptionist. We were introduced to staff, given our first month's money, and talked through the programme and health and safety issues. For now, all our love,. And othe...

M&S diary: [Maro] Trip to the tailor

http://www.generocitydiary.blogspot.com/2007/01/maro-trip-to-tailor.html

Maro and simon's journey in sierra leone. Wednesday, January 03, 2007. Maro] Trip to the tailor. I think in an attempt to smarten me up, Auntie Pat brought several metres of yellow-gold fabric back from a trip to the Gambia a few months ago. I was instructed that this was to be made into an African style skirt and top for me and a matching shirt for Simon. My mission was to find a tailor since Pat didn’t know any, having only returned to Salone recently after a decade away. Posted by generocity at 4:26 AM.

HIV/AIDs: October 2006

http://generocityhiv.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html

Stories from sierra leone's forgotten. Monday, October 30, 2006. I went to court last week with about ten other people in solidarity with a woman named Rashidatu. Rashidatu is a member of SWAASL’s network for positive women. Three weeks ago her landlord beat her unconscious. He claims it was because she hadn’t paid her rent. Others suspect it had more to do with her HIV status. It’s not as crazy as it sounds. Rashidatu’s landlord did not turn up. So the case was adjourned with the promise that he wou...

Sierra Leone: September 2006

http://generocitysierra.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html

News, opportunity and politics from the ground. Tuesday, September 19, 2006. Really quite tired today. I’m working pretty flat out; added to which, my office moved last week and is now 2 hours away (1 and a half in good traffic; rare). So the days are long, though it’s likely I’ll work away from the office once or twice a week. But what’s Britain’s role in all this? The UK’s Department for International Development supposedly has huge influence over how this ex-colony is run far more than the UN. But...

http://generocitysierra.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html

News, opportunity and politics from the ground. Tuesday, March 06, 2007. A different story: life and death in Sierra Leone. In January I went to the funeral of the father of my close friend and colleague Flora. The next day I wrote a piece that was swallowed up by one of Freetown’s frequent power cuts. So I am sitting down again now to try and pull together some of the thoughts I had then. Posted by generocity at 4:58 PM. Back to the homepage. Reflecting our own experience. Bringing global justice home. Saturday, May 13, 2006. Our hope for the generocity project is to see it realised on the streets where we live.
