The Chronicles of Gen: Transfiguration: my 4th year art.

The Chronicles of Gen. This blog is dedicated to my creative endeavors; and the candyfloss-happiness and turmoil they bring me. Wednesday, September 15, 2010. Transfiguration: my 4th year art. My final fourth year art exhibition, Transfiguration. Occurred in Gallery-in-the-Round in Grahamstown in 2009. Is clothed in flowing nondescript garments and was positioned in front of a mirror, half turned from the initial approach of the viewer. Her arm is lifted but it is only on very close inspection that t...

The Chronicles of Gen. This blog is dedicated to my creative endeavors; and the candyfloss-happiness and turmoil they bring me. Saturday, October 30, 2010. Drawing on such a large scale (its 2m long) was quite challenging. talk about an intimidating white page. But I really enjoyed working in charcoal, and loved the mood it allowed me to impart on this piece. I also used a little bit of green chalk-pastel so as to get that old photograph look. Under the milkwood: Jewels of the bush
http://underthemilkwoodtree.blogspot.com/2012/09/jewels-of-bush.html
Tuesday, 11 September 2012. Jewels of the bush. Not long after we moved to East London, I found myself wending my car along a dusty farm track. I was searching for a nursery I’d heard about, one with a great variety of bromeliads, indigenous bulbs and clivia. Jewel-like clivia flowers in my garden. Slowly, one pearl-like seed emerged, and another and another. “This is how you do it,” she told me, and then handed the seeds to me. Stella’s seeds and their grandchildren. Flowers, and they are ripe. And the ...

Under the milkwood: My happy jeans with karma
http://underthemilkwoodtree.blogspot.com/2012/09/my-happy-jeans-with-karma.html
Thursday, 6 September 2012. My happy jeans with karma. Today, I am wearing my most beautiful jeans and they are making me feel happy, so happy that I want to dance. Not even the gloomy weather can get me down. These epic jeans are going places – again. When she handed them to me last week, I was bowled over. With a sense of reverence, I attached another strip of fabric to the legs to accommodate my very long legs. Then I chopped off the waist – these jeans settled into the waist in a way th...S not for me.

Under the milkwood: Hot and hotter
http://underthemilkwoodtree.blogspot.com/2012/04/hot-and-hotter.html
Tuesday, 10 April 2012. On weekends, V likes to get busy in the kitchen. It’s his “down-time”, he says. He picks whatever chillis he can find in the garden and turns them into sauces of varying heat. And he bakes bread. Chopped chillis from my garden . a breathtaking array of colours. Close-up of the naga chilli. Is measured at more than a million Scoville units, which is used to measure such things. But I did enjoy the jalapeno slammers – quite a kick they delivered – that V made on Easter M...Then V ge...

Under the milkwood: An ode to singing souls
http://underthemilkwoodtree.blogspot.com/2012/09/an-ode-to-singing-souls.html
Thursday, 20 September 2012. An ode to singing souls. Whether it’s a passing touch of the blues or sheer horror that can persist for years, bad times happen to all of us. When I’ve been able to stand back and look at my own bad times with some sort of detachment, I’ve been intrigued trying to understand why some of us lift out of the sadness, sometimes with new momentum, and some seem almost trapped in bleakness. The most joyful colour of all . yellow flowers, like this hibiscus in my garden, are R.

Under the milkwood: Today smiles on us
http://underthemilkwoodtree.blogspot.com/2012/09/today-smiles-on-us.html
Wednesday, 26 September 2012. Today smiles on us. After weeks of foul weather, today smiles on us with sunshine and a cooling breath of wind. That breath is becoming a hot berg wind, though, and the heat is surely a warning that more foul weather is on its way. Nevertheless … the day feels like summer and it reminds me how enormously privileged I am to live here next to the sea. Treasures from the beach. Gnarled driftwood, and smooth rounded stones. Some treasures find their way into mobiles. The flooded...

Under the milkwood: July 2012
http://underthemilkwoodtree.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 25 July 2012. A fish and fowl affair. Maybe it is happening at last: two days ago, I watched a thick smudge of frenzied activity slide past in the sea. The gannets – must be thousands of them – were crazy, and the sea was foaming. One of the dikkops in the aloe garden. Last year’s eggs . so well camouflaged in the nest in the grass. Are the dikkops back? Cape gannets on the sea, as seen from my office. Just as exciting, for me at least, is that the dikkops. Dikkop is an Afrikaans word that tra...

Wednesday, 10 October 2012. There be giants here. Only the most intrepid of us – like my dear V – have ventured outside in the rain and wind of the past week. And he did it all for me. Table two protects those saplings at the back from fiddling hands. It had got to the point that most of my cutting pots and seedlings trays were scattered over the ground. Table one is a beauty. I don. 8217;t even notice the slightly splayed legs. After more than a year of musing and keening, V, my most unhandy husband, st...

Under the milkwood: April 2012
http://underthemilkwoodtree.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Monday, 30 April 2012. When freedom is normal. It’s Saturday on Freedom Weekend. My body is tired after this back-breaking work of digging out weeds, grass and other invasive stuff from the aloe garden. So I am happy to pounce on V’s suggestion that we drive to Chintsa East (a huge village on this part of the east coast, relatively speaking) to find a restaurant where we can have lunch. A corner of my (legal) home: plenty of reason to smile. First stop is the Barefoot Café. We head to Michaelas. 8221; he...
