my square one: January 2012
http://mysquareone.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Where all my wanderings start. Tuesday, January 17, 2012. I sat down to write on the topic of love, thinking I'd have wonderful, uplifting words to share. I was surprised when what spilled out seemed a little darker than I usually post publicly. I've decided to go ahead and share it anyway. The love that existed in my childhood was entirely conditional. I disagree. To this day, I am convinced that once we accept that life is supposed. Why is it so hard to hear your child cry it out? What could happen if ...

my square one: A Toolbox Full of Hammers
http://mysquareone.blogspot.com/2014/09/a-toolbox-full-of-hammers.html
Where all my wanderings start. Wednesday, September 17, 2014. A Toolbox Full of Hammers. I've not read much on the Adrian Peterson story (the Ray Rice story pretty much depleted my reserves) but what I do see saddens me. People defending the actions of a man who abused his 4yo child; a DA stating that Peterson "exceeded the standards" for disciplining his child, as if there is an acceptable standard for hitting someone younger, smaller, and weaker than you; folks trotting out the old. This is my personal...

my square one: What About Tests?
http://mysquareone.blogspot.com/2014/09/over-past-few-weeks-weve-been-reviewing.html
Where all my wanderings start. Wednesday, September 17, 2014. Over the past few weeks, we've been reviewing a practice test for the Accuplacer test used by our local community college as part of Andy's exploration of what's next for him. We learned a few things. First, we are all grammar geeks, with no tolerance for typos, and poorly proofed sample exams. Really, if this practice test is indicative of the sort of education one receives in public school, ou. Oh, and he took the tests cold, with no study o...

my square one: May 2014

Where all my wanderings start. Wednesday, May 28, 2014. Yes, they know life can be hard. I'm deep in another rant, so it must be time for another blog post! What is the compulsion people, especially adults talking to teens, have to rain on parades? The adult, I assume with the intent of, I don't know, enlightening the kid (I'm trying to assume positive intent here) says something like, "Wait, once upon a time ago, you quit a similar activity you tried.". But really, why do adults feel the need to patroni...

my square one: May 2012
http://mysquareone.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
Where all my wanderings start. Friday, May 25, 2012. What makes him Dad? I had only one item on my list of what kind of Dad I wanted for my children. I wanted my children to know they are loved. That's it. Just to know their Dad loves them. Then, that was all I knew to ask for. It was the one absence that I felt most defined my own childhood. I've come to know that loving your child isn't just saying the words, as important and healing as it has been for me to hear those words fill our home. It's seeing ...

Our Hapa Home: Tent Rocks Spring 2012
http://ourhapahome.blogspot.com/2012/05/tent-rocks-spring-2012.html
Tuesday, May 01, 2012. Tent Rocks Spring 2012. Wow, it's been a long time since I posted anything here! So, it's not that we've done nothing in the past year and a half, just that I was lazy about getting the camera out, and even lazier about moving those pictures to my laptop. First time in 6 years his hair has been this short. This past weekend, we had our annual hike of Tent Rocks, with several friends. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Our Hapa Home: More pix
http://ourhapahome.blogspot.com/2010/02/more-pix.html
Sunday, February 07, 2010. We spent Friday afternoon at the Aquarium and Botanic gardens. It was a spectacular day and the kid who came out had a great time. One of the few shots I got with Dan looking at the camera. Andy using his new headphones to enjoy music and a moment alone at the Japanese Garden. Inside the aquarium, which for some reason is usually first toured at. Warp speed, making for a challenging photo shoot! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Just a Bald Man.

Our Hapa Home: Social skills
http://ourhapahome.blogspot.com/2010/02/social-skills.html
Sunday, February 07, 2010. As unschoolers, we hear the occasional question about how our kids have enough social outlets and opportunities without going to school. I'm sure we'd hear them more often if we didn't have such a busy social schedule hanging out with our unschooling friends! I think many people hear 'homeschooled' and picture terribly shy, inept kids with no idea how to navigate the larger world. I've not blogged or talked much about it before, but I will today. I pointed out that I've found t...

Our Hapa Home: Soccer Season returns!
http://ourhapahome.blogspot.com/2010/10/soccer-season-returns.html
Wednesday, October 06, 2010. Soccer season is back in swing. Dan's team has by now played 5 games, losing only 1. He's having a great time, playing some time at goal keeper and forward. Here's a great shot of him returning the ball after stopping a goal attempt. And Dan at forward. He so loves playing soccer, and he's become really quite a good player.
