Quintessence of Dust: New limbs from old fins, part 3
http://sfmatheson.blogspot.com/2011/09/new-limbs-from-old-fins-part-3.html
New limbs from old fins, part 3. The third installment of my series at BioLogos. Is now up. It discusses the developmental mechanisms that underlie the construction of limbs, and the striking fact that these mechanisms are the same ones used to construct fish fins. Watch for an appearance by Sonic Hedgehog. Posted by Stephen Matheson. Please review my Rules and policies. For contact details, including an anonymous comment form that works all the time. Quintessence of Dust: New limbs from old fins, part 1
http://sfmatheson.blogspot.com/2011/09/new-limbs-from-old-fins-part-1.html
New limbs from old fins, part 1. Last month, I started a series on the topic of limb evolution. Here at Quintessence of Dust. That series has been transformed (through a series of intermediates) into a series of posts. At the BioLogos site. The first installment is now up, and it provides an expanded introduction to the topic and a little historical context. Subsequent posts will tackle fossils, developmental biology, genetics, the explanatory role of design, and related themes. Posted by Stephen Matheson.

Molecular evolution: improve a protein by weakening it. In the cartoon version of evolution that is often employed by critics of the theory, a new protein (B) can arise from an ancestral version (A) by stepwise evolution only if each of the intermediates between A and B are functional in some way (or at least not harmful). This sounds reasonable enough, and its a good starting point for basic evolutionary reasoning. In work just published by Joe Thorntons lab. Posted by Stephen Matheson. Was a milestone ...

A look at biological problems. Developmental Plasticity And Evolution. Picavet suspension and pole mapping. April 21, 2015. My first kite flight had many stabillity problems. In order to give my camera better stability when hanging from a kite, I built a Picavet. Suspension. Pierre Picavet was a French inventor, balloonist and kite enthusiast who created this suspension in 1912. The idea is that no matter how the kite moves, the camera will stay stable as the rigging slides back and forth. April 30, 2016.

http://cephalove.blogspot.com/2010/07/pass-clams-please-strategy-for-object.html
A blog documenting my intellectual love affair with our many-armed friends. Tuesday, July 27, 2010. Pass the clams, please: A strategy for object retrieval in the octopus. I recently blogged about a line of research on octopus reaching movements. But I left out an important study for time's sake. I promised to cover it promptly, and so I'm making good on that promise here. To recap:. The study I'll look at today is Octopuses Use a Human-like Strategy to Control Precise Point-to-Point Arm Movements. Cambr...

Darwin's Doubt Critical Reviews: Luskin’s Hopeless Monster
http://darwinsdoubtreviews.blogspot.com/2013/09/luskins-hopeless-monster.html
Darwin's Doubt Critical Reviews. Saturday, September 7, 2013. Luskin’s Hopeless Monster. Nicholas Matzke, PhD. I’m checking in from the airport on the way back from Evolution 2013. For me, highlights of the meeting included presenting my BioGeoBEARS R package. And some Ph.D. results. We have reputations to uphold! Part of the reason for harmony was that Jerry recently blogged. Such nice things about my review. Before the book came out, and that I made up quotes of Meyer. Are crucial reading if you did no...

Darwin's Doubt Critical Reviews: Meyer’s Mistake
http://darwinsdoubtreviews.blogspot.com/2013/09/meyers-mistake.html
Darwin's Doubt Critical Reviews. Saturday, September 7, 2013. Quite apart from any factual errors, about which I’m not at all qualified to judge, here is what seems to me to be Meyer’s fundamental logical error IMO:. Darwin’s Doubt, Chapter 2). He illustrates this by asking us to comparing this figure, which he says is what we do see:. With this (appallingly badly drawn) one:. Which he claims Darwin’s theory says we ought to see. Well, of course it does, Dr Meyer! You have just, in Chapter 2 of your fat ...

Darwin's Doubt Critical Reviews: Doubting "Darwin's Doubt"
http://darwinsdoubtreviews.blogspot.com/2013/09/doubting-darwins-doubt.html
Darwin's Doubt Critical Reviews. Saturday, September 7, 2013. This question is the starting point for a new book that aims to rekindle the “intelligent design” movement. “Darwin’s Doubt,” by Stephen Meyer, which will début at No. 7. On the New York. That intelligent design was religion, not science, and barred it from schools. Contains many well-documented counterexamples to Meyer’s argument, and the mechanisms by which life’s machinery can change quickly are well known. Whole genes can b...Most absurd o...
