Geocaching in ottawa and beyond. December 12, 2010. GPS in the news. GPS helps lazy people destroy their brains. Russia’s GLONASS system (their answer to GPS) has experienced a pretty serious setback due to a botched launch. That caused the loss of three satellites. To the first GPS satellite in orbit! Smartphones are outselling dedicated GPS units. No surprise there, but I’m still not inclined to pay the data fees for a smartphone. Gps in the news. Laquo; More on Opencaching.com. Geocaching in ottawa and beyond. October 28, 2010. Absolute power trails corrupt absolutely. I was going to call this post “Geocaching in the age of. Power trails,” but I can’t put tags in the title. Yesterday Taoiseach hid a new puzzle cache. It’s got me thinking about where this game came from, and where it’s headed. The Ottawa geocaching scene has been very puzzle-centric since the early days of geocaching. Even before the mystery/unknown geocache type was created, geocachers in this area were tak...

Power Trail Practices | geonarcissa
https://geonarcissa.wordpress.com/2010/11/10/power-trail-practices
Geocaching in ottawa and beyond. November 10, 2010. With the advent of gigantic power trails, it’s not surprising that many geocachers are attracted by the challenge of finding hundreds of caches as fast as they can. It’s not really my geocaching style, but I can see why it’s appealing to other geocachers. I was recently horrified by something I read in this Groundspeak Forums thread. Laquo; What have you left behind at the GZ? An amazing geocaching log. I hadn’t heard of such a thing, but that sou...

Geocaching in ottawa and beyond. December 13, 2010. Wow, threatened much? Rather than just taking the high road and ignoring the new geocache listing site, some of the folks at Groundspeak have been acting in ways that hint at their vulnerabilities. I’m not madly in love with the new site or the rating system, and I’m certainly not ready to abandon Geocaching.com, but I have serious concerns about handing any more money to a company whose CEO posts things like this to Facebook:. Thumbs up, Groundspeak.

Good news for geocaching! | geonarcissa
https://geonarcissa.wordpress.com/2010/12/09/good-news-for-geocaching
Geocaching in ottawa and beyond. December 9, 2010. Good news for geocaching! I’ve been kind of a grump about geocaching for a few weeks, but today TWO nice things have caught my attention. 1 Check out Groundspeak’s official blog. To read about a woman who successfully convinced a national park to allow physical geocaches! This is a real victory for us. 2 Groundspeak is going to implement a cache rating system… and it probably won’t suck. Laquo; Opencaching.com. More on Opencaching.com. On December 9, 2010.
