Thursday, January 29, 2015. Are you my Thought Partner? Of course "thought partner" is jargon, defined by one reference as "special words or expressions used by a particular group. that are difficult for others to understand." Aside from its vaguely Orwellian character (cf. "thought police" in. The phrase only serves to show off the author's desire to abandon plain speech in favor of a phrase du jour, perhaps with a view to impress. Comments on this and other blog posts are always welcome. Monday, March 31, 2014. The Corcoran Gallery, continued. On February 19, after months of secrecy, the proverbial "bolt out of the blue" struck with the news that the Gallery had reached an arrangement not with the University of Maryland but rather with the private George Washington University (GWU), and the National Gallery of Art. It is a far more comprehensive scheme than the first. In several weeks the final details will be announced but the outline is as follows:. Posted by Geoffrey Platt Consulting.

Geoffrey Platt Consulting - BLOG: July 2014

Tuesday, July 22, 2014. What the World Cup Suggests about Nonprofits. It got me thinking - what is at the core of these disasters , such as the shutdown of major institutions, like the Corcoran Gallery of Art or the New York City Opera? In my opinion it is unquestionably with the board of directors/trustees. That is where the buck stops. Some work has been done, but is it effective? My experience suggests no - with the subsequent impact on the board's success in governing. We don't have coaches, but we d...

Geoffrey Platt Consulting - BLOG: Listen to the Dreamers
http://geoffreyplattconsulting.blogspot.com/2015/07/listen-to-dreamers.html
Thursday, July 2, 2015. Listen to the Dreamers. Doubtless it helps when the espouser of the big picture has the pocket depth of Mr. Schwarzman, who, for instance, gave $100 million to the New York Public Library in 2008 and more recently $100 million to China's Tsinghua University. The point is, however, that nonprofit leaders, often besieged by financial pressures, need to allow themselves to think big and funders to listen to those who do. As always I welcome comments on this post, and any others.

Geoffrey Platt Consulting - BLOG: Spend Money to Raise It - Clearing the Hurdle

Tuesday, May 26, 2015. Spend Money to Raise It - Clearing the Hurdle. Some non profits, especially smaller ones, may find themselves in a difficult quandary: how to increase fund-raising revenue when staff dedicated to that purpose is woefully underpaid, overworked and prone to turnover. Any increase in such salaries might expose the organization to a deficit situation, especially if, in the spirit of fairness, it means increasing salaries elsewhere . Neil Edgington, author of the excellent blog. Some ye...

Geoffrey Platt Consulting - BLOG: "How'm I doing?" - Performance Reviews
http://geoffreyplattconsulting.blogspot.com/2015/03/howm-i-doing-performance-reviews.html
Wednesday, April 1, 2015. The three-term Mayor (1978-1989) of New York City, the late Ed Koch, was famous for, among other things, standing on street corners or in subway stations and asking whomever passed by: "How'm I doing? This question amounted to requesting a kind of instantaneous, button-holing review of his performance as Mayor. The verdicts were positive enough to get him elected three times in a famously fractious city. A performance evaluation should be viewed as a constructive exercise. A...

Thursday, June 19, 2014. Snatching Order out of Chaos. Further he recommends if your time is limited not to work "in sequence." Don't go to the project's next step - rather, as he puts it, "snatch something out of the air. " It might be good. Granted this improvisational approach can be nerve wracking. It is useful if you believe, as he does, that chaos is healthy, and that the universe is self-regulating. It took a threat from his patron to cut off funds to get him to finish. The responsibilities of nonprofit board members is an ongoing topic both here at Geoffrey Platt Consulting and wherever else there is discussion about the charitable sector. A recent survey conducted by. The worthy organization devoted to nonprofits' governance, contains some interesting findings, especially about board members and fundraising.
