Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2001. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines were planted at our Lenswood vineyard in 1983. There are 1.7ha of Cabernet Sauvignon and 0.44ha of Merlot planted. In normal years our blend is around 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. The first release of Cabernet-Merlot from our vineyard at Lenswood was in 1988. The vines have excellent capacity to ripen their modest crops and provide flavour complexity and richness. A fine, savoury and subtle wine of excellent depth of flavour.

Made to show the fresh Sauvignon aromas coupled with a, crisp dry palate. Lively fruit flavour with a delicate, lightly textured finish make it ideal to accompany seafood. A very good vintage with moderate crop levels (2.6 kg/vine), early ripening and full flavour development at relatively low sugar levels. Harvest occurred on the 13th and 14th of March. We have been making wine here for 30 years and I haven’t seen an average year yet. Another roller-coaster season with the warmest October ever to start the growing season (average temp 18 deg C vs average of 13.1 deg C) followed by an unseasonally cool November which upset flowering in Chardonnay and Pinot. This caused very poor fruit set in Chardonnay and Pinot. Thankfully the Sauvignon flowered after the cool weather and set normally. And the Riesling. Well I just don’t think 2014 is a year for us ...
