I am interested in classical landscapes among many other things, but only as a general reader and traveller. I studied Greek and Roman history, philosophy and law at the Australian National University and the University of Cambridge. I live in and travel from Canberra, a city that has become my Ithaca.

I have mostly used A.T. Murray’s translation (1919) as revised by G.E. Dimock (1995), with the parallel Greek text, from the wonderful Loeb Classical Library. Sometimes I have preferred A.V. Rieu’s translation (1946). Of verse translations, I have always enjoyed Robert Fitzgerald’s (1961). His poetry is not always a literal rendering of Homer. For that reason, perhaps, it is a great pleasure to read.

Where the island is narrowest it forms an isthmus so low-lying that it is often submerged from sea to sea. Both Paleis and Crannii are on the gulf near the narrows.
