Updates on our travels
Voyages: September 2011
http://georgeandceleste.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
Updates on our travels. Monday, September 19, 2011. In Search of English Books - Puebla. Note: this should have been posted around September 16, 2011.). After checking into Casa de Palma and having a rest, we headed out into the drizzly night in search of English books. We've been dying for them, feeling like nomadic people lost in a desert without water. The desk clerk stopped us and offered us a paragua (umbrella), which is such a sensible word; literally "for water.". We headed back towards the zocalo...
Voyages: August 2011

Updates on our travels. Friday, August 26, 2011. George and I are living near the base of Pico de Orizaba, the highest mountain in Mexico and third highest in North America, which peaks at 18,491 feet. Now that's a mountain! George and I ARE NOT going to climb Pico de Orizaba. But, we have begun hiking up a smaller slope. About 15 minutes from our home is the base of a path that leads up a hillside to a historic battle site. And hope that you can hear it (and we'll post to the blog.). Links to this post.
Voyages: The View from Up Here
http://georgeandceleste.blogspot.com/2011/09/view-from-up-here.html
Updates on our travels. Sunday, September 4, 2011. The View from Up Here. Saturdays are becoming great fitness days. The hike up Cerro de Borrego takes us about an hour, which includes a few good rests and a bottle of water. You can see that the rains have washed out part of the slope, but maintenance crews have cleared the stairs. (The hike is partly on steps, partly on dirt, and partly on rock.). And, we saw some butterflies-to-be. It's beautiful up there! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
Voyages: Saturday in the Park
http://georgeandceleste.blogspot.com/2011/08/saturday-in-park.html
Updates on our travels. Monday, August 8, 2011. Saturday in the Park. We live about a block from Bicentennial Plaza, a compact sunken park with playground, coffee kiosk, ping pong tables, and stages. It's one of our favorite places to spend an afternoon, or even an hour in the morning playing frisbee. This Saturday we stopped in our tracks when we saw tribal dancers preparing for a ceremony. One of our favorite aspects of this was the involvement of all ages: from one-year to seventy-something.
Voyages: December 2010

Updates on our travels. Tuesday, December 14, 2010. San Jose del Cabo to Muertos Cove. San Jose to Muertos Cove. 23 59355N, 109 49.352W). Perhaps it was that we were headed for a place known as "Dead Man's Cove" . Whatever the reason, we were anxious to arrive before nightfall. At 8:00 am on December 4, we motored to the fuel dock at Puerto San Jose. Alas, a Cayman Island fishing vessel with voluminous tanks had pulled into the fuel dock before us, and there was only room for one! Anchor lights. I qu...

Making stories and sailing the salish sea. Tuesday, January 6, 2009. With the recent passing of my canine pal and a life-threatening infection in my aging father's hip, I have a had a lot of emotional activity to observe in myself lately. To put it simply, I've been about as much of a wreck as I can be. To any outsider, I am equanimously handling each challenge with a modicum of grace, but internally. oh boy! And there are dozens of books on the subject. Primates exercise self control and. Of course folk...

Making stories and sailing the salish sea. Friday, January 10, 2014. Dervish is, in fact, on the hard awaiting some loving attention and a launch later this year. She has been on her trailer for 14 months. Much too long. I hope to get a lot of sailing in this summer one way or another. Probably mostly local day trips and quick over-nighters. I don't see any longer trips in my future at this time. So where the heck have I been and what have I been up? Should I write about Olympia arts? I welcome your input.
Dramanauts: March 2010

Making stories and sailing the salish sea. Thursday, March 25, 2010. The Project List Is Devouring My Calendar! As a new boat owner, I am finding myself simultaneously smitten and overwhelmed. Steve is the Listking and has conveniently helped me to sort out all the things that must be done to Dervish. Before cruising season starts. He has posted a new list of my tasks along with his (much longer) list on the Live Page. In less than five minutes it went from 3-4 knots to about 15! When we hit 6.6 knot...

Making stories and sailing the salish sea. Friday, March 11, 2011. Engine Alignment and Spinal Recovery. The actual move was brutal due to a late February blizzard that left the docks iced over and treacherous. This, combined with steep low-tide ramps, made transporting my carloads of small boxes (small because I can't carry more than 25 lbs) nearly impossible. But tell me, what is the use of realizing a dream if you don't have some adversity to overcome? Correcting this would bring everything much close...

Making stories and sailing the salish sea. Tuesday, June 14, 2011. Fettling: the Joys of Kerosene. Here is my story:. Dervish, my Cal 2-29, came with a beautiful, vintage, pressurized kerosene range. I had never used a kerosene stove before, but figured I'd give it a try. All last summer I cooked on it, and grew to love it for its super-hot regulated flame. Gradually over the year, one burner started to seep from the jet, first leaving the burner wet which caused smoking, and later,. Was very helpful, an...

Making stories and sailing the salish sea. Saturday, January 30, 2010. But something smelled. weird. Hot. Toxic. Holy crap! All was well. I drank my coffee out in the cockpit in the rain where I could at least breath. I wondered if it was a good day to try the mast stepping. Did I totally screw up by not doing the de-naming ceremony? Events like this turn me superstitious in a heartbeat. We hooked up the mast and slowly they hoisted her up while I scuttled about clearing lines and such. Once the mast was...
Dramanauts: November 2008

Making stories and sailing the salish sea. Wednesday, November 26, 2008. The way we spend our days is, of course, the way we spend our lives." - Annie Dillard. Afternoons have been exceptionally beautiful here on Camano Island, with sunshine filtering through the fall colors one minute and misty rains the next. A few days ago a warm breeze blew through, so I took a long walk and found myself contemplating Ms. Dillard's quote in relation to my own life. How do. I want to spend my life? The US Department o...

Making stories and sailing the salish sea. Friday, December 26, 2008. Lily was an amazingly wise and loving animal. Throughout her many years, she played piano (see the video). Had a great sense of humor and feigned vicious attack on the code words "politician" or "get dick;". Well loved. Well lived. Links to this post. Wednesday, December 17, 2008. The Mevlevi, or "The Whirling Dervishes", believe in performing their dhikr in the form of a "dance" and music ceremony called the sema. Links to this post.

Updates on our travels. Saturday, January 7, 2012. Chiapa de Corzo - The Cathedral of San Domingo. George and I have spent nearly three weeks in the state of Chiapas, drawn here by my new work. While we are excited about what this job means for me, we have been very discouraged by the living situation. We are in a small, bright orange. A river runs through it. A big river. Grijalva formed the Sumidero Canyon. I mentioned the crocodiles to George, and he pointed to two men standing in the river, waist-dee...
