Garden Great in Zone 8! I’m sorry it’s been such a long time since my last post. It’s been quite busy here. I’ve been harvesting lots of tomatoes and beans and cucumbers. And my flowers are looking great — zinnias and dahlias and daisies. Everything even survived my two-week trip to Africa. Why? Step Two: dig up the broken sprinkler head. Be careful around the pipe! Step 3: obtain a new sprinkler head. Make sure you have the right connector! Step One: connect your timer, backflow preventer, pressure regu...

Garden Great in Zone 8! Today, my goal is to put down as much mulch as possible. Mulch helps prevent weeds and water loss. So that’s my project. Yippee. During my mulching, I saw some new blooms: daisies, hydrangeas, and gardenias. Summer is almost here, y’all! Mulch in progress: I put down newspaper first to slow down the weeds. Back to the yard. Enjoy this beautiful day! Y’all need to know how much I love my three Roombas. So when iRobot comes out with a weed pulling robot, I am going to buy it.

Garden Great in Zone 8! Zone 8 is my USDA plant hardiness zone. The United States Department of Agriculture defines zones by average annual minimum. Another useful standard is the American Horticultural Society’s Heat-Zone Map. Which defines zones by the number of heat days (temperatures over 86 F) per year. My garden is in Zone 8 according to the AHS’s Heat-Zone Map. What does all of this mean? One response to “ About Zone 8. Thou Shalt Not (Crape) Murder Georgia Garden Girl. Garden Great in Zone 8! It was a glorious Palm Sunday in middle Georgia. The sun was shining, the sky was blue, and the temperature was just about perfect. After an excellent church service at The Ridge,. I spent most of the day in the yard. First, let’s talk tomatoes. Most folks know that they need support. The stores sell contraptions called tomato cages. I should just buy a few of those for my tomatoes, right? So what should you do? Well, you could use a simple old stake. A long piece of bamboo or...

Garden Great in Zone 8! Haiku for Parasitic Wasp. Thank you for laying your eggs. On the bad hornworm. Squash Growers: Inspect for Invaders! Every year, I have been thwarted by my evil arch nemesis, the squash vine borer. If you’re not familiar with this pest, count your lucky stars. A squash vine borer will turn your beautiful zucchini plant into a wilting heap of tragedy overnight. It’s bad, y’all. I spent most of the day in the yard. So what should you do? Well, you could use a simple old stake. A...

My garden is gasping for some cool air and a few drenching rains. It’s not unusual for us to have 90-95F (32-35C) summer temperatures, but a never-ending string of such days and only a scant shower every now and then – that is unusual! We need rain. And cooler temperatures.. Sunday, July 17, 2011. Was our specific des...

Garden Great in Zone 8! This Morning’s Harvest. We had a very mild winter here in middle Georgia, so I was not sure that any peonies would bloom. But here’s what I found this morning, along with two heads of lettuce that are ready to eat! Spring for the Green! I hope you have been enjoying the rain here in zone 8. Everything looks very green outside! I’m busy baking the desserts—lemon bars, cookies and other goodies. Thanks, White Oak Pastures and Loree Abell for the eggs! Take that, slugs! Long time no ...

Tuesday, June 25, 2013. I had forgotten about this blogposting option on Google. It is very friendly. If you are on Google it is also easy to connect to and read what ever worthwhile news I am posting. This past week I journeyed to the garden over at Christ United Methodist Church in Roswell. (BTW - if you want a garden plot, there are a few left. With our excess rain and late start to warm temps, it could be more successful than those of us already started!
