Project GeoSim is a joint research project of the Departments of Computer Science and Geography at Virginia Tech. The original Project GeoSim was created in the early 1990s, written for Microsoft Windows. We re-wrote a number of the modules as Java Applets in the late 1990's. At this time, Java Applets are quickly becoming unsupportable. We rewrote the IntlPop module with HTML5/JavaScript in 2014. Therefore, the only GeoSim module that is current supported is IntlPop 3.0. MMap is a geography quiz program.

Mental Maps is a program that allows students to test their knowledge about the location of cities. Mental Maps may also be configured to ask questions about the cities such as their population, average summer and winter temperature, cost of living and desirability as a home for the user. The GeoSim Interface Library (GIL). Is an easy to use set of functions and tools for implementing a graphical user interface (GUI). GIL was originally designed to support Project GeoSim. A series of interactive simulations for introductory geography classes. It is also used by the SWAN Data Structure Visualization System. Migration and Political Power (MigPol).

Migration and Political Power (MigPol). MigPol lets a student study the effects of population growth an migration it affects congressional apportionment in the United States. As certain states grow in population more quickly than others, the size of their delegation in the U.S. House of Representatives also grows. With MigPol, students can see how current trends in population growth may translate into future political power, or model the effects of alternate scenarios.

IntlPop and HumPop

IntlPop is a population change simulation program. Factors such as Birth Rate, Life Expectancy, and Migration Rate affect population growth. IntlPop allows you to manipulate these variables and simulate population growth based on your values. Intlpop can be installed and run without Humpop. Click on this image to see a full size version:. Migration Modeling (MigModel).

MigModel lets student develop and explore models relating to migration. The student selects factors that he or she thinks were significant to migration between counties of the United States during a selected decade.
