Notes on politics, law, the culture and the news. Posts © 2011-2012 by Gerald G. Day. Sunday, June 7, 2015. June 6, 2015. Magazine turns 150 this year. To note the event, it prepared a large anniversary issue which combined new material with reprints from its long history. One of the latter is an article from 1933 entitled "If the Supreme Court Objects," which has some resonance as we anticipate the Supreme Court’s decision in King v. Burwell. The article noted this question:. Subscribe to: Post Comments...

The title "A Different Washington" is intended to convey two messages. The first is that I am writing from and no doubt reflecting the views of "the other Washington,". Perhaps provincial but perhaps unaffected by the fog that seems to cover the nation's capital. Send e-mails to geraldday@centurylink.net. Searching on this page.

I especially like this one: "To discourse at length in a pompous or boastful manner. To pretend to understand technical subject matter and sell it to others even dumber than oneself." [65]. Up to May 2, Fox ran 1,098 segments that "included significant discussion of Benghazi, an average of roughly 13 segments each week. [66]. Ms Tantaros also managed to find Obama at fau...

Every now and then I look at what I’ve written and decide that I sound like a one-note scold, constantly painting a dark picture of the state of the nation, the culture and politics. It can’t be that bad. Then I read a newspaper. It is. Consider The Seattle Times. Government-mandated wage floor that guarantees reduced employment opportunities for many workers. One morning we were startled by a loud announcement in French, then in English: "Attention, attention: due to a glitch in our hotel," everyone must go to an emergency exit. This left us wondering a) where is an emergency exit? B) what do we do once there? C) why are the staff paying no attention? And d) what is the French word for "glitch"? Century opera bouffe. Gates, Sr. coauthored a book entitled Wealth and Our Commonwealth. Are called commonwealths, a reflection presumably of the original meaning of the word: "Body politic founded on law for the common ‘weal,’ or good." [59]. However, dictionaries tell us that "commonwealth," meaning public welfare or the general good, is "archaic" or "obsolete." [60].

How have "liberal," and even "progressive" become terms of derision? To sharpen the focus, why have voters in the middle supported Republicans in recent years, but formerly voted Democratic? Why do they now support the party of wealth and privilege? Could they be persuaded to vote Democratic in the future? Town Hall list no. 1. If you're not a...

It isn’t pleasant to contemplate, and it sounds pretentious to declare it, but American culture is in decline. The fact that Donald Trump was elected President, and the resulting inanity and chaos in his White House, might be considered proof enough, but there are any number of indicia. One of the most serious is. The failure to control possession of firearms. The mass shooting at...

A Different Washington: Archive 2010. January 5, 2010. Snow thought that "[i]ntellectuals, in particular literary intellectuals, are natural Luddites." However, his expectation of the scientific understanding which non-scientists should have was unrealistic. He contended that not being able (as a non-scientist) to recite the second law of thermodynamics was equivalent (for a scientist) to not having read a play by Shakespeare. In a later essay,. However, the issue of education — scientific, literar...
