Get Growing New Zealand! Edible gardening, made easy and fun! It’s time to…. Newer posts →. July 14, 2011. I must, must, must keep a better record of what I plant and what I harvest. Now this is quite different from my “It’s time to…” tab because what happens and what should happen can be worlds apart. So quickly, because this part of a gardening blog should not be too much of an effort, here’s what I did at my Matakana garden last weekend. A small patch of leeks where I had cleared the bed. July 10, 2011.

Summer’s bounty | Get Growing New Zealand!

Get Growing New Zealand! Edible gardening, made easy and fun! It’s time to…. Goodbye summer. Hello winter. →. January 7, 2012. The early potatoes, peas and broad beans have – like Christmas – come and gone. We have eaten the first ripe tomatoes, harvested the garlic and red onions, and feasted on salads. I still find things to fret about, however. What gardener doesn’t? The result is I now have six plants producing approximately a bucket of cucumbers a week. The neighbours are loving them! As for the zuc...

Get Growing New Zealand! Edible gardening, made easy and fun! It’s time to…. 8230;to get early potatoes started. August 15, 2011. I planted 10 Cliffs Kidney seed potatoes on Saturday. Now, let’s see when they are ready to eat. There was a time, when I lived in at the end of a no-exit road in the south Wairarapa, that I always had new potatoes for our Guy Fawkes night feast. But there the soil was sandy loam and, although I didn’t appreciate it at the time, it was the BEST gardening soil. You are commenti...

Get Growing New Zealand! Edible gardening, made easy and fun! It’s time to…. Saturday in the garden; Sunday in the kitchen →. Goodbye summer. Hello winter. March 28, 2012. I think I suggested in January that everyone plants a second round of courgettes. Well, mine were a failure. All flowers and no fruit. They are definitely past their use-by date. I will throw in some more compost and plant spinach seedlings in the empty space. I anticipate making sowings of carrots and parsnips throughout the winter&#4...

Saturday in the garden; Sunday in the kitchen | Get Growing New Zealand!

https://getgrowingnz.wordpress.com/2012/04/01/saturday-in-the-garden-sunday-in-the-kitchen

Get Growing New Zealand! Edible gardening, made easy and fun! It’s time to…. Goodbye summer. Hello winter. Saturday in the garden; Sunday in the kitchen. April 1, 2012. An autumn Saturday in the garden at Matakana invariably means spending Sunday in the kitchen. This weekend has been no exception. It’s a real harvest salad: fresh watercress from the stream that runs through our property at Matakana; baked, peeled and quartered beetroot; sliced Lebanese cucumber; avocado grown by my friend Jude south of A...

Head of the Harbour: A grand old Lady...

http://headoftheharbour.blogspot.com/2012/10/a-grand-old-lady.html

Head of the Harbour. A place to ponder. Monday, October 8, 2012. A grand old Lady. Tug Lyttelton dockside and firing up. Here is a little bit about the tug from her website http:/ www.tuglyttelton.co.nz/. The tug Lyttelton and her engines were built in Scotland in 1907 by. I can say, wholeheartedly, that she is, indeed, a great lady. The interior detailing of the Lyttelton is just stunning, all lovely wood and gleaming brass. Others were out enjoying the excellent sailing weather. But good on them :-).

Head of the Harbour. A place to ponder. Monday, May 13, 2013. At Cass, heading for the hills. Train about to enter Otira tunnel. Now for a rubber fix. May 14, 2013 at 6:01 PM. What a fantastic shot of the black centre line creeping across the single point perspective bridge! Glorious day and no one in sight . Thankyou for sharing :). May 15, 2013 at 5:09 AM. The shadows were a real feature. I forgot to add we saw a trout and lots of salmon - a guy pointed then out just above the Mt White Bridge. I live i...

Head of the Harbour: City art...

http://headoftheharbour.blogspot.com/2013/04/city-art.html

Head of the Harbour. A place to ponder. Sunday, April 28, 2013. Yesterday I retraced my last post's inner city circuit with friend Elaine. This time it was a Saturday and there were more people about, more voices, more movement. In a CBD that has been populated mosty by demolition workers for over two years, this was such a great thing. Made by Mel, Reuben and Sasha from Governors Bay. Love the hair! By Rata. I just love the elegant movement in this one. Reflection in the sky walk . Mike Hewson again.

Head of the Harbour: A tale of two cities...

http://headoftheharbour.blogspot.com/2013/04/a-tale-of-two-cities.html

Head of the Harbour. A place to ponder. Friday, April 19, 2013. A tale of two cities. My cousin Fleur and I have just spent several days in Nelson making contact with our Harris relatives and learning more about our great and great, great grandparents. A very productive, happy time. Did anything surprise or shock me? My reaction remains one of disbelief. It still seems unreal. This puzzles me - when the evidence of the destruction wrought by quakes and subsequent demolition is so tangible. It...A favouri...

Head of the Harbour: At Birdling's Flat...

http://headoftheharbour.blogspot.com/2013/06/at-birdlings-flat.html

Head of the Harbour. A place to ponder. Sunday, June 9, 2013. A good workout for the horse I decided as I trudged along a stony ridge towards the Lake Forsyth ( Te Roto o Wairewa. Outlet, the loneliness of the spot accentuated by a single figure. There were a few hardy fisherfolk. And a shag who came in to dry his wings and preen. A bank of cloud rolled in from the south and suddenly it was very cold. I returned thankfully to the car with a pocketful of stones and a nice driftwood dragon. So beautiful in...

Head of the Harbour: Working from home...

http://headoftheharbour.blogspot.com/2012/10/working-from-home.html

Head of the Harbour. A place to ponder. Sunday, October 14, 2012. The past few weeks as I have sat on the sofa working, I have been able to look out the living room window, past the frame of pendulous lavender wisteria, to two Kakabeaks (Kōwhai ngutukākā). That cover a trellis. The Kakabeak is not a long-lived plant and these two are past their used-by date, yet they have produced these glorious, jewel-like flowers that have glowed in all weathers. When I feel a little unsettled or disgruntled about not being in Europe, it's things like Forest and Bird's Bird of the Year.
