GETTINGtheGIRLS: Farewell Dear Friends
http://gettingthegirls.blogspot.com/2008/06/farewell-dear-friends.html
Reflections on our journey to Ukraine to adopt sisters Galyna and Anastasia. Wednesday, June 11, 2008. I will probably never have the chance to meet you, so let me say how much you've meant to me, and to all my family. Your comments and emails have been such an important part of my life that it's hard to say goodbye. But the time has come for me to spend less time blogging and more time parenting as we become a homeschool family, juggling work and school. Grace and Peace -. The Scourge of Ukraine. This i...
GETTINGtheGIRLS: The Permanent Things
http://gettingthegirls.blogspot.com/2007/06/permanent-things.html
Reflections on our journey to Ukraine to adopt sisters Galyna and Anastasia. Saturday, June 16, 2007. I recently wrote about. This country being shattered by alcoholism, but don't come here expecting to see nothing but misery, because Ukraine, and its beautiful people will also steal your heart. Ukrainians have always had a passion for. A concept revived by writer Rod Dreher. Those "things" include faith, family, friendship, architecture, poetry, literature, and all fine art forms. Dear Hale Family,.
GETTINGtheGIRLS: Orphanage #4
http://gettingthegirls.blogspot.com/2007/06/orphanage-4.html
Reflections on our journey to Ukraine to adopt sisters Galyna and Anastasia. Thursday, June 7, 2007. Pictures simply don't provide a good sense of how it feels to be at this place. I almost didn't use this shot because from this perspective, it doesn't look that much different from an old public school building back home. Efforts are made to make it more inviting, but the truth is this is a rundown old building most of us could never imagine having to live in. Are the kids still at the internot? Thank Go...
GETTINGtheGIRLS: A Great Summer Read
http://gettingthegirls.blogspot.com/2008/06/great-summer-read.html
Reflections on our journey to Ukraine to adopt sisters Galyna and Anastasia. Thursday, June 5, 2008. A Great Summer Read. Colin Thubron must be one of the finest writers of our time. I came across. Formerly titled "Where Nights Are Longest") on the excellent website of Dr. George Grant,. A Presbyterian pastor in Franklin, TN, who has this extraordinary book listed among his 25 top "modern non-fiction titles.". I love reading travel books in the Summer, and this is easily the finest in the travel genre I'...
GETTINGtheGIRLS: Beach Party
http://gettingthegirls.blogspot.com/2007/06/beach-party.html
Reflections on our journey to Ukraine to adopt sisters Galyna and Anastasia. Friday, June 15, 2007. Adoptive families have a special bond and today we enjoyed a long overdue beach break with the Calzadilla family of Chicago, who are here to adopt 15 year old Vera. We have much in common with the Calzadillas as they have a soon-to-be five year old daughter, Elyse. Elyse and Christian seem to be pretty cool with the fact that their days as only children are just about over! Jim- I know you have two very sp...

Bringing Raisa Home: March 2008
http://bringingraisahome.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html
Thursday, March 27, 2008. Rachel started gymnastics a couple weeks ago, and she loves it! She also started ballroom dancing lessons! Our local “Fred Astaire Ballroom Dance Studio” has a spring session for 4th-graders at our elementary school, and Rachel is a natural! Ballroom Dance is my weakness – I used to dance back in Ukraine, and Alex took several years of Ballroom Dancing as well, so my goal now is to find partners for both girls and start the formal lessons ASAP :). Of course her happiness! She...

Bringing Raisa Home: First Mother’s Day with Rachel!
http://bringingraisahome.blogspot.com/2008/05/first-mothers-day-with-rachel.html
Tuesday, May 13, 2008. First Mother’s Day with Rachel! About a month ago Rachel started giving me some hints about a special gift for me :) Something like this: “Mama, I’m making something for you, but I won’t tell you.” It was very cute! Then the last week or so both girls were very mysterious and tried to cover their art projects when I was nearby :) And finally on Mother’s Day I’ve got gifts from all 3 kids, and it was a VERY special day. May 13, 2008 at 3:22 PM. May 13, 2008 at 4:31 PM. Our lilacs ha...

Bringing Raisa Home: Pen Pals
http://bringingraisahome.blogspot.com/2008/04/pen-pals.html
Wednesday, April 30, 2008. While preparing for our trip to Ukraine, I virtually "met" Kelly. Kelly and her husband came home with 2 kids – a 10-year daughter Diana and a 4-year old son Will, and now Rachel and Diana are pen pals! But I think it’s a great idea to exchange real letters, and Rachel thinks so too! What else is new? A couple of days ago we celebrated 3 months since Rachel came home. And you know what? We also went to the circus – the Damascus Shrine Circus was in town. Though Rachel...Another...

Bringing Raisa Home: October 2007
http://bringingraisahome.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, October 30, 2007. The Order of Toasts and 19 days to go. After I wrote about the customs and superstitions last week, my friend Kelly asked me to write about the order of toasts for gatherings. The following is Odessa's version, so it can be totally different in other parts of Ukraine :). Rule #1 - don't drink without toasting! You can be considered an alcoholic! The first toast is always for the occasion. If it's a birthday party - drink for the person whose birthday is celebrated. On the adopt...

A Sample of Matt’s Work. In case Matthew’s Birthday tribute was taken to be just a proud father’s requisite and exaggerated boasting, today I decided to post a sample of his work for you to decide yourself. This ain’t no ordinary home movie video, no sir. Mark my words, I’m not exaggerating when I say this guy is going places. He’s amazing! And his current success in television production just serves to emphasize what I’m saying. Love ya lots Matt! Birthday Tribute for My Son. So on his birthday, one of ...
KOOL Person of the Day | Adopting In Iowa
https://doctordavid.wordpress.com/2008/02/22/kool-person-of-the-day
KOOL Person of the Day. The other day Cindie was recognized as KOOL 99.5 FM’s KOOL PERSON OF THE DAY. The honor was marked by a certificate that entitled her to a complimentary steak dinner at a local most popular restaurant and one for a free car wash. I was impressed. To me, Cindie is my COOL person of the day, everyday. A little extra recognition on the radio with a steak dinner and a car wash thrown in are frosting on top. Thanks guys! Here’s to an awesome lady! Cool in everyway, everyday! You are co...
Unaware of Their Peril | Adopting In Iowa
https://doctordavid.wordpress.com/2008/10/22/unaware-of-their-peril
Unaware of Their Peril. Natural children, from the time they are born, expect their parents to parent them. The baby cries, the mother mothers they both attach to each other, it works, it’s natural. No thanks are in order. But, what if something happens, something that isn’t supposed to happen. The parents die. The child cries, but there is no mother to mother the child is alone. This doesn’t work, this is not natural. Which I wrote about before, the elaborate and powerful structure of denial the orphan ...

Bringing Raisa Home: August 2007
http://bringingraisahome.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, August 29, 2007. Day 21 - no date yet. We don't have a travel date yet, but I didn't really expect to hear anything this week. I heard from my facilitator today, he told me the invitations are issued by SDA on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Yesterday they were announcing the dates for the dossiers that were submitted up to July 14th (we were submitted on the 30th). So my online friends who were submitted on the 16th should hear something really soon! On Labor Day (! And Oleg and I had a great time:.

Bringing Raisa Home: September 2007
http://bringingraisahome.blogspot.com/2007_09_01_archive.html
Tuesday, September 25, 2007. All kidding aside, the packing list is a big deal in our family :) I know I need to pack light. But how light? Here is a list of things I compiled from reading various blogs and boards:. Travel pack of toilet paper (some public restrooms in Ukraine don't have TP). A small bottle of antibacterial soap (for example, Purell). Ziploc bags (a lot of people say it's a life saver). Grocery bags (the supermarkets in Ukraine don't give out grocery bags). The list goes on and on and on...
