Get Well Tom!

Friday, October 2, 2009. The 2009 Brita Climate Ride. The final day was awesome. We had a lot of downhill heading into DC, making for a quick 50 miles in the morning. Rather than stopping in Silver Spring for lunch with everyone else, Bonnie and I powered on to Mt. Pleasant. After taking showers and changing into fresh clothes, we sat on my front porch, ate pizza, drank coke, and relished our great bike tour. Thursday, August 6, 2009. Bicycling from NYC to DC in September. Besides sharing the joy of cycl...

Get Well Tom!: Reflections from Göttingen

http://getwelltom.blogspot.com/2008/07/reflections-from-gttingen.html

Tuesday, July 1, 2008. Moments of peace have been rare for me in the past year, but a certain clarity has settled upon me today in Göttingen. For the past two weeks I have been participating in a German archival research program that would naturally lead to writing a dissertation. However, what I discovered while being here has only made it more clear that I don't want to do it anymore. Let me now turn the tables and challenge you to reflect. Have you asked yourself recently, "Who do I aspire to be?

Get Well Tom!: Rehabilitation Update

http://getwelltom.blogspot.com/2008/03/rehabilitation-update.html

Wednesday, March 26, 2008. Fortunately, we can do a trial run to see if this would be a good course of action. By injecting me with lidocaine, a local anesthetic, we can simulate the phenol injections, but the effect only lasts two hours. That way, we'll have a pretty good idea of what would happen, and whether it would be a blessing or a curse. March 27, 2008 at 4:08 AM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Get Well Tom!: The old Tom is back!

http://getwelltom.blogspot.com/2009/03/old-tom-is-back.html

Sunday, March 1, 2009. The old Tom is back! What a difference two months can make! At the end of December, it felt like my life had completely imploded, leaving me with no answers or direction. But since then every aspect of my life has picked up. My outlook has brightened, my walking has dramatically improved, and my friend Ana and I started a new social organization called Cafecitos, which bears many characteristics of Fiat Lux and the Twelve Hours Club. March 1, 2009 at 7:34 PM. Good to hear things ar...

Zipping Laos into the technological age through the eyes of a public health worker. Tuesday, January 6, 2009. I've been changing my mind a lot (not new for some of you) regarding my travels, and I've decided to make things simple by just spending my last week over here in Siem Reap and Angkor, Cambodia, to explore the center of the magnificent, ancient Khmer civilization. Zipping Laos into the technological age through the eyes of a public health worker. Friday, January 2, 2009. Happy New Year, Hmong Style! Hmong New Year lasts for a month or more since villages celebrate at different times, perhaps having to do with timing of the harvest season. This week is the grand festival at Kilometer 52, a conglomerate of Lao and Hmong villages around the 52nd kilometer marker on Route 13 north of Vientiane Capital. A Few Hmong New Year Traditions. The courtship game played between...

Zipping Laos into the technological age through the eyes of a public health worker. Saturday, September 13, 2008. This week was a rush of preparation for Laos, from figuring out travel/visa issues to discussing research protocols/logistics with the field team to sussing out the difference between "deh" and "deeh".to even looking for a motorbike helmet that won't make me look terribly like a matchstick! For which I can only thank my colleagues in Laos, will be phenomenal. You must come visit! Lao is a ton...

Zipping Laos into the technological age through the eyes of a public health worker. Thursday, July 17, 2008. Beginning to Learn Lao. I really want to make an effort to understand and converse in Lao, so I've been searching for a Lao tutor all over DC. The embassy was a surprisingly disappointing resource, but I finally was able to reach a former president of the Lao American Women Association. I've perused books (not too many options out there), but I really want a "native speaker" (a la JET! To a more s...

There are paths along the river that have great views of the mountains. The paths are all hard-packed gravel and not too difficult for wheeling, although there are a few hilly spots.
