Tuesday, July 05, 2005. Does anyone still think Steven Spielberg is a great director? I wager most film critics think he is mediocre, but in the culture at large, there is still a feeling that Spielberg is an auteur, a master director who combines popular appeal with cinematic excellence. This is, of course, utter crap. Most of his films are forgettable, dull, and reliably disappointing. I like to say that Spielberg has made 2 1/2 good movies:. But that is churlish. I loved.
