Ghana Team Journal

Ghana had made me feel like home. Thursday, August 2, 2012. For breakfast today we had oatmeal, toast, and orange juice. Martine was a little tried because she could not sleep. It could be because in a couple more days I will be leaving for New York. I can’t believe this is my last journal entry. I will miss Ghana so much along with the children, my room mate Margaret, Esther, Samuel, Gracey, and Evelyn and the ladies at the clinic. One of the children even asks me for my phone number so she could call me.

Ghana Team Journal: October 2011

http://ghanateamjournal.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Sunday, October 30, 2011. Quote of the day: Drink your water or you will be caned! 8211; Esther, our loving. We headed back to the school to get our first dose of teaching. Knowing I had no teaching experience, Esther tossed me into a classroom filled with energetic (and restless! After observing the classroom for two hours, we headed back to the hotel for refuge from the blazing afternoon sun. We departed for the library promptly while the clouds were hiding the sun. As we arrived I was overrun by a...

Ghana Team Journal: November 2011

http://ghanateamjournal.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Friday, November 18, 2011. Quote of the day: “The future belongs to those who live intensely in the present.” – Anon. By: Daniel Chen and Jim Leslie. When I came to. My P2 class was responding well to tighter time restraints on math and English exercises. In fact, every student handed their workbook in before time had expired. Progress! Teaching English to the P2 class is always interesting. While Teacher Kennedy was educating them about the difference between present and past tense and the conversio...

Ghana Team Journal: Reading more stories

http://ghanateamjournal.blogspot.com/2012/09/another-day-at-clinic-and-in-library.html

Tuesday, July 24, 2012. This morning for breakfast, we were served corn flakes for breakfast. I haven’t had this cereal in decades. Unfortunately, I couldn’t enjoy it because it was served with carnation milk. Plus cold cereals are not my thing. But I did enjoy the omelet with toast. Esther came about minutes to 8:00am. We sat at the table to read yesterday’s journal. Then we were off to the clinic. Dinner was good but a lot. I ate mostly the veggies and a little rice. I was still full from lunch. To par...

Ghana Team Journal: Warm welcome in Senchi Ferry!

http://ghanateamjournal.blogspot.com/2012/07/warm-welcome-in-senchi-ferry.html

Warm welcome in Senchi Ferry! Sunday, July 22, 2012. When we reached the guest house, the people there were very welcoming. After settling down in our room, we meet with Esther to have a small quick meeting. We learned some native words like:. Obroni: “white” person. To a woman: yaa ena. To a man: yaa agya. To a friend: yaa anua. To a child: yaa oba. After our meeting we ate lunch. Food was awesome! We waved them hello. Our first visit was to the Chiefs of the village house. The. Party at school and busy...

Ghana Team Journal: May 2012

http://ghanateamjournal.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

Ready, Set, Go! Monday, May 28, 2012. On your mark, get set, go. yes we’re off on our second week of volunteer work in Ghana. Lyn and Roberta returned to their schools from last week, Emily to the Clinic and Roger and Ann did work this week at the Catholic school. I passed out the cards made by 4. Grade students at a Catholic school where I substitute, and they read the cards, enjoyed the fact that some had US/Ghana flags on them, but loved the individual pictures of the students. Roger, however, finishe...

Costa Rica Service Program Blog: Working on a very important brochure

http://costaricateamjournal.blogspot.com/2013/08/working-on-very-important-brochure.html

Monday, August 26, 2013. Working on a very important brochure. Today was spent almost entirely in the teacher's salon working with Karen on one of the most important tasks so far: creating a bilingual pamphlet detailing the five main projects undertaken by the students of Colegio. Raising and selling both young and mature pigs (for commercial and culinary purposes, respectively). Caring for nearly 100 ponedora hens (and collecting their fresh and delicious eggs on a daily basis). I have no doubts that ea...

Costa Rica Service Program Blog: Extra special bonding time

http://costaricateamjournal.blogspot.com/2013/08/extra-special-bonding-time.html

Thursday, August 22, 2013. Extra special bonding time. Getting ready to paint! Karen sharing her expertise. Profesor Jorge, Lena, Jen, and Justing on a painting mission. We finished just in time before the rain swept in. The morning had been the prettiest weather of the week and there were gorgeous views of the water from the top of the hill where the classroom that we were painting perched. It was mesmerizing watching the fog roll in, bringing the rain with it. The view in the afternoon. Http:/ www....

Vietnam Report from the Field: December 2011

http://vietnamteamjournal.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Friday, December 2, 2011. Mixed emotions always accompany the final day of any extended experience. Was it what we expected? Did we need our host’s expectations? What can we take away from all this and what is best forgotten? In any case, our last day began with a rare brightness from the sun shining through clear skies, an uplifting omen perhaps. Pam was expected to participate as a judge but previous commitments at the University precluded her attendcance. An audio system amplified noise and music.

Romania: Impressed by the Romanian people

http://romaniateamjournal.blogspot.com/2013/09/impressed-by-romanian-people.html

Wednesday, September 18, 2013. Impressed by the Romanian people. Today was our third day at the clinic. I think that both the children and volunteers have found our groove together. We have learned which children need a little extra encouragement and those who need a little bit more discipline. I think today, I was only pinched once by Alina! However, today Sammy did pull my hair once or maybe three times. Every time we pass by. We are all feeling a bit tired; however, seeing the smiling beautiful faces ...

Friday, May 25, 2012. Yesterday I left many sets of the flash cards at the school. Today I was very pleased to see the English teacher already going through them to determine what she might use in her class. Each class today was Bingo time. We played Bingo last Friday and the kids have begged for it every day. I told them we would do Bingo again on Friday. Bingo gives the students good practice for speaking and hearing numbers. Tuesday, September 17, 2013. Children who need and deserve continual nurturing. I am sad to know that the teams are no longer as consistent as they were in the past.
