Having spent a couple of Sunday mornings in the area of Castellar, observing the wonderful. Estrel and the Bee-eaters, w. E just had to add a post about our short outing. The Kestrels seemed to have bred well, as we saw a good number of chicks in the nest holes. Waiting to be fed. There where also slightly older chicks feeding out of the nest on nearby roofs. During the Christmas holidays we had a couple of free afternoons so we headed to Europa Point to observe the Gannets that enter the bay to feed. Wow, what a show they put on for us! The way they fly into the wind, whilst still observing the sea below, and then performing vertical dives from considerable heights to catch fish. Young birds aquire adult plumage by stages over 4 - 5 years.

Our first stop was at Los Lances Beach in Tarifa which produced; two Oystercatchers, Grey Plover, Ringed Plover, Audouin Gulls, Sandwich Terns, and Northern Gannets. Then we had a short drive over to La Janda and on entering the area we could already hear Common Cranes calling out in the distant fields. A good start we thought, and so it was.
