Friday, August 26, 2011. Tree Seeds, Nuts or Fruits? The more I write about trees the more I realize how little I actually know. As an artist, I just look at what attracts my interest and although I'm always naturally curious as to "what" the tree, bird or flower is it is not my primary concern: hence my ignorance! This month- August- one is constantly aware of trees' ripening seeds, both on the branches and the ground. I happily photograph them and then suddenly wonder, what is this? Is it a seed? Here ...

Monday, January 16, 2012. New York City December Trees. Twelfth Night has been and gone, so although it is really far too late to write about Christmas I am now going to tell you something about a short family visit to New York, between Christmas and New Years Eve. But that didn't stop me enjoying the lights- although the crowds were so dense you could barely see the skaters:. Needless to say, I cannot visit New York without going into Central Park. I like this quote of his from 1870: "We want a ground t...

Exploring the varied collaboration between people and plants, we aim to cultivate a sensibility that strengthens our connection to the natural world". And here are a couple of my photos included in the article- a Coral Tree and a Silk Floss Tree:. Thursday, February 9, 2012. Sunday, April 22, 2012. Time has flown by and lots of planned posts have not got written, what with the recent birth of a second lovely Granddaughter and the build up to the birth. As it is Earth Day, I had planned to make a supreme effort but now just want to get to bed before being woken by my elder Granddaughter early in the morning, so I will just say:. A Happy Earth Day to everyone- even though it is nearly over! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Moreton Bay Fig Trees.

Saturday, November 22, 2008. Since I started this blog, friends and fellow tree/nature addicts keep telling me how they would like to have my photos as cards. I have finally taken their advice and for the last few weeks have been enjoying myself converting many images int0 both cards and large-format photos. I will shortly be reconstructing my website - www.gillianware.com. And will up-load them onto it. And here are some of the images that are in various formats, large and small:. Moreton Bay Fig Trees.

Tuesday, July 31, 2012. Malibu: Communal Nesting in Ficus Trees. In my last post I wrote about the shocking rape of the Malibu Lagoon. One of my fears has been for the affects on the wonderful members of the Heron family who nest in the two Ficus trees in the car park at Malibu Country Mart. These are: the Great Blue Heron, the Black Crowned Night Heron, the Great Egret and the Snowy Egret. When the de-watering takes place, where will they fish for their youngsters? And here are a couple of the Great Egr...

Sunday, August 11, 2013. ASH TREES: Chalara Ash Dieback. Tragically, these wonderful, graceful native trees are severely threatened in the UK, where our landscape- which includes 92 million Ash trees- could be changed as it was by the onslaught of Dutch Elm disease in the late 60's. This time, it is by a deadly fungus- Chalara fraxinea- which especially affects the Common Ash, Fraxinea excelsior (so named for its height- rising to the Heavens, sometimes to 40m! Photo by Donar Reiskoffer. And here you can...

Friday, August 31, 2012. Crazy Melaleucas: Palisades Park. Anyone who has visited Santa Monica's Palisades Park will be familiar with these extraordinary, trees- trees that don't grow vertical, as we expect trees to grow, but sprawl horizontally all over the grass. They are Pink Melaleucas, or Western Tea Myrtles, natives of Australia and a member of the extensive Eucalyptus family- the Melaleucas themselves including over 100 species. Apparently they get their name from the Greek words melas. If you are...

Sunday, November 20, 2011. The Fall in LA. All my life having been subjected to the miraculous, dramatic shocks of the changing seasons in the UK, I will always feel rather cheated in Southern California, where the changes are more subtle. Because of this, I get extra excited when finding evidence of Autumn- or I should say "the Fall"- in LA where the majority of trees are evergreens. Before writing this post I looked more closely at them, and soon realized that there were no signs of the Acer family win...

Sunday, December 4, 2011. Since joining Santa Monica's Treesavers in 2007, I have been lucky to have met and befriended a variety of wonderful, people, all caring deeply about trees in different ways. After a recent meeting, Kathy- one of our valuable members- sent us all the following email. I was so enchanted by the way she was able to express her heartfelt delight in her experience- an experience I totally empathized with- that I wanted to share it with my readers:. A few days later we received this n...

Bereaved by suicide is the missing piece of a jigsaw. Bereavement by suicide is like trying to find the missing pieces of a jigsaw. The people that are left, have to pick up the pieces that are all mixed up and scattered around. Trying to build a picture but finding there will always be a few pieces missing. The gaps left are where that person fitting into the picture of life but also the gaps are of the unanswered “why? Not knowing what the picture looks like to help build the picture.
