Glass powder is sifted onto a glass base and manipulated until I'm satisfied with the result. The pieces may be fired several times with additional details added on each subsequent layer. Some pieces are fired so that the texture of the frit is maintained, and some are fired until they are smooth. Click on the thumbnail to view a larger image.

I was first exposed to actual glass making when i was 19. I was spending time in Herat, Afghanistan, and I would often find myself sitting for hours in Sultan Hamidy’s Glass Factory watching the glass makers fashioning goblets and beads of exquisite lapis colored glass. Time passed. Career. Marriage. House. Kids. Finally, time to explore. I started by learning how to make stained glass, but found the exacting nature of it to be too tedious and rigid for my impatient mind.

These masks are comprised of several layers of glass and occasional inclusions. They may be fired in the kiln several times until I'm happy with the results. Some are then sagged over a unique form to give them dimensionality. Click on the thumbnail to view a larger image.

It all started when I was a kid and I would spend, what seemed like hours, watching the flame worker on the boardwalk in Wildwood, NJ, performing magic as he spun the glass into poodles and sailboats. The true color appearing as the glass cooled. How could I not be infatuated by this brilliance. Fortunately, the pockets had no holes, and many years later I was able to pursue glass.
