The Bitten Apple: March 2011
http://karolsapple.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Saturday, March 5, 2011. The Algebra of Selling Yourself. Image courtesy of apoorplayer.net. Work is supposed to take up 40 hours of each week, right? We sell 40 hours of each precious 168 hours of our lives in order to survive. It's less than a quarter of our time, so it's not a bad deal really, considering what people once had to do to survive. Then we sleep, what? 7 hours a night, if we're lucky and insomnia doesn't plague us. That's 49 hours a week, 30 percent of a week. I have to get it under contro...

The Bitten Apple: The Girl Who Loved a Warmer Story
http://karolsapple.blogspot.com/2012/01/girl-who-loved-warmer-story.html
Sunday, January 1, 2012. The Girl Who Loved a Warmer Story. Image courtesy of Ann's Needlework. Wood's film version of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo tops the local marquees over the holidays, I have to wonder why the Americans felt the need to remake a three-year-old movie that the Swedes had already done a perfectly fine job with. It's a mystery, but then so is the popularity of the Millennium Trilogy at all, in my opinion. Was failing to capture my imagination and provide a reliable escape from reality.

The Bitten Apple: Things I Wish I had
http://karolsapple.blogspot.com/2008/10/things-i-wish-i-had.html
Tuesday, October 7, 2008. Things I Wish I had. My sister, who likes weapons of all sorts, sent this to me, who likes pink in all forms. I'll admit, I do get sick of pink once in awhile, but I have learned to appreciate it, especially on things that don't ordinarily come in pink, things that are traditionally guy stuff. Pink Smith and Wesson. Camouflage is designed to allow the wearer to blend in with its surroundings. So, where is this S&W supposed to blend in exactly? The pajama aisle of Mervyn's? Grant...

The Bitten Apple: February 2011
http://karolsapple.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Wednesday, February 9, 2011. Image courtesy of lataco.com. Well, now that I've revived the blog, I have to decide what to do with it. There are so many directions to go that I just can't decide. Maybe it could be a spot for restaurant reviews, in which case I should tell you about Naan of the Above. In Arcata, where I had lunch today. It's like fast food, except, well, not fast. And my favorite Indian restaurant remains: Eureka's buffet at Pak Indian Cuisine. If only it was closer to my work. After a six...

The Bitten Apple: Goth RV Rodeo
http://karolsapple.blogspot.com/2009/01/goth-rv-rodeo.html
Saturday, January 31, 2009. Too much rodeo for these RVs (photo from blogs.tampabay.com "A Dover RV Dealer's Display"). Last night I dreamed there was horrible, undefinable music coming from my neighbor's house. In the dream, there were kids arriving as if for a party, kids dressed in black vaguely reminiscent of goth or emo. I wondered if the parents were out of town or what, wondered if things were going to get out of control later or what. January 31, 2009 at 4:24 PM. Anyway, the fashion looks like sk...

The Bitten Apple: March 2012
http://karolsapple.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html
Friday, March 30, 2012. Hope: True or False. Everyone in America, it seems, is rushing out to participate in the big Mega Millions lottery. The drawing is this evening, and the jackpot is a staggering $640 million. Here's a secret: I have managed to reach this advanced age without ever playing the lottery - until today. It Was My Idea. Nevertheless, it was at my request tonight that my boyfriend and I trundled down to the liquor store in his rusty old Toyota to buy lottery tickets. I didn't even know how...

The Bitten Apple: Becoming Fluent in the Rhetoric of Empowerment
http://karolsapple.blogspot.com/2012/03/linear-road-to-success.html
Sunday, March 4, 2012. Becoming Fluent in the Rhetoric of Empowerment. I read an article by Elizabeth Flynn called “Composing as a Woman”. Wherein she assigns gender to different rhetorical styles and notes that these differences (linearity and nonlinearity) are related to unequal places in the social order. The article focuses on American English and American comp studies. Rhetorical approach to writing as they are in a nonlinear. Flynn points out that, thanks to process pedagogy, wherein the teacher nu...

The Bitten Apple: November 2011
http://karolsapple.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Sunday, November 27, 2011. Image "Masquerade" by Thomas Barbey). Last night I had the strangest dream. I woke up from it sobbing in grief, but it wasn't my dream. Of course, it was a bubble from my own subconscious, but it's just flotsam, or empathy, for an old acquaintance I spoke with last night on the phone. Should I tell you my dream, or should I tell you the horrible Job-like story of my acquaintance's life? Let's start with the dream. All I could say was "No! That's when I woke up crying. This acqu...

The Bitten Apple: August 2010
http://karolsapple.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, August 14, 2010. Horror in the Laundryroom. Image courtesy of filmsinreview.com). I can still remember the first slasher films I ever saw, although it's taken me an hour and a lot of random internet surfing to remember the title, Silent Scream. All I really remember are a lot of terrifying moments in a big rambling seaside house. And then a horrible screaming madwoman escaping from an attic, all wild black hair, wild eyes and wildly swinging knife blade. In those days, we were already taught to...
