Githion ist eine Kleinstadt (ca. 7.500 Einwohner) im Süden des Peleponnes, am Eingang zur Mani gelegen. Laut einer antiken Überlieferung wurde die Stadt von Apollo und Herakles erbaut. In der Antike war Githion der Kriegshafen der Spartaner. Von den Athenern und Ihrem Admiral Tolmides zerstört entstand diese Hafenstadt genau an der Stelle Ihrer antiken Vorfahrin. Zu römischer Zeit erlebte Githion dann wieder eine Hochblüte. Danach fiel die Stadt ein wenig in die Bedeutungslosigkeit.
