Giving Gladly: Aim high, even if you fall short
http://www.givinggladly.com/2014/10/aim-high-even-if-you-fall-short.html
Wednesday, October 8, 2014. Aim high, even if you fall short. It's obviously silly to come up with new "facts" for the sake of convenience. Is it any better to come up with new moral beliefs for the same reason? Let’s take the question, “Is it wrong for me to eat meat? 8221; Upon hearing the question, I immediately translate it as, “Do I want to stop eating meat? But it resulted in me eating far fewer animal products than I usually did. And maybe if I'm honest about what I believe is right, someone else ...
Giving Gladly: How much to push the envelope?
http://www.givinggladly.com/2015/04/how-much-to-push-envelope.html
Tuesday, April 7, 2015. How much to push the envelope? This sprang out of the last post on how to talk to people about giving. If you're trying to persuade people, it's unclear how far to push things. I hope there are studies out there on the optimal approach, but I haven't seen them. I once assumed that Woolman was the kind of person who found it easy to do socially provocative things —. Martin Luther King, Jr. Was arrested nine months before Rosa Parks for resisting bus segregation in Montgomery, but w...

Tuesday, December 9, 2014. For 2014 are out! Giving What We Can recommends a similar list. With the substitution of Project Healthy Children. Rather than Give Directly. I think GiveWell's process is the most rigorous in the field of poverty (process described here. Giving What We Can also explains their process. So you can see if their value system might be closer to yours. If you believe animal welfare work is most important, Animal Charity Evaluators. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Giving What We Can.
Giving Gladly: Cheerfully
http://www.givinggladly.com/2013/06/cheerfully.html
Saturday, June 8, 2013. As a young person, I was extremely struck by the realization that my choice to donate or not meant the difference between someone else’s living and dying. A lot of decisions started to look very starkly wrong. I remember telling my dad that I had decided it would be immoral for me to have children, because they would take too much of my time and money away from better causes. “It doesn't sound like this lifestyle is going to make you happy,” he said. So test your boundaries, and s...
Giving Gladly: Tradeoffs
http://www.givinggladly.com/2012/03/tradeoffs.html
Friday, March 23, 2012. Economists love to think about tradeoffs (or opportunity costs, as they call them). Any money we spend can't be spent on something else, so if I use $2.50 to buy a strawberry milkshake it means I'm not using that $2.50 to get the chocolate one or the mint chocolate chip one. I don't think we're usually that rational. For one thing, it's unpleasant to think about negatives. We like to think about what our money does. Get us, rather than the infinite variety of things it doesn't.

Marginal Change: 2013 David Brooks vs 2011 David Brooks
http://marginalchange.blogspot.com/2013/06/2013-david-brooks-vs-2011-david-brooks.html
Tuesday, June 4, 2013. 2013 David Brooks vs 2011 David Brooks. David Brooks' column today. Dylan Matthews had a fascinating piece. Trigg has seized upon the statistic that a $2,500 donation can prevent one death from malaria, and he figures that, over the course of a lucrative Wall Street career, he can save many lives. He was motivated to think this way by the utilitarian philosopher Peter Singer. Now, as a matter of fact, I have no beef with that. If you want to follow Trigg's path, you should. Nothing...

Medicine, philosophy, and invective – in reverse order. Saving the World, and Healing the Sick. February 12, 2015. When I applied to medical school, I had to write a personal statement: selling how exceptional my achievements were, what wonderful personal qualities I had, and my noble motivations for wanting to be a doctor. The last of these is the most embarrassing in retrospect:. This juvenalia is the “I like science and I want to help people” wannabe doctor is regarded akin to a child zoom...My other ...

Radiant Things: Tell them.
http://jdwise.blogspot.com/2013/01/tell-them.html
Sunday, January 27, 2013. I complained about a problem. I've been thinking about what the solution might be. When people die, we wish we had told them things like that. And yet it's hard to say it in the course of everyday life. What praise do we not give, and why? And the normal realm does not encourage this kind of thing. It embraces irony, and geeky subcultures especially prize critique and verbal sparring (see also: Why Our Kind Can't Cooperate. Which is fine, but that's not all there is to life.

Giving Gladly
Friday, December 30, 2016. Two standard donations and one new one. Here are three places Jeff and I are donating this year. The first two are similar to what we’ve been doing for years, and the third represents a change. Jeff and I want to support work that directly makes the world a better place. (Some arguments against falling into a “meta trap” here. As usual for us, this year we’ve given just over half our donations to direct work. We made these donations to the Against Malaria Foundation.
