Anna Coleman, Illustrator. Saturday, October 25, 2014. Mama's Sauce and the Paper Wren Celebrates Seven-Or-So-Years. Seven (or so . . . I was just notified by Linkedin that it's been seven) years ago, Nick Sambrato, of Mama's Sauce. Nick was installing a 1950s era 12 x 18 Kluge Automatic, a stunning example of 1940s era "robotics". Chase Heavner was, I believe, Nick's first Letterpress client. Chase owns a production company (" Fiction. So, to celebrate, what, seven years now?

Paper Wren Press : Another Publication of Hornbooks!
http://paperwrenpress.blogspot.com/2014/10/another-publication-of-hornbooks.html
Anna Coleman, Illustrator. Sunday, October 26, 2014. Another Publication of Hornbooks! Making Hornbooks is a sideline for Paper Wren Press. We make them because we love History, and we love and appreciate historical processes. I have already posted several articles about the Hornbook on the "G. Johanson, Printer" blog, it's background, how ours are made, why we choose the materials we do, &c., and as you read this, if you wish to delve into these articles, click here. I use a Chop Saw at first to make th...

Paper Wren Press : August 2013
http://paperwrenpress.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Anna Coleman, Illustrator. Tuesday, August 20, 2013. Hannah and Colin's Announcement. This order will be a bit different, which is why I am featuring it here. How does an idea get from the drawing board to the Letterpress, to the Client? This is the first installment of what will be a two part blog entry. I penciled out the rough on the Bristol board with a No. 2 soft, using a kneaded eraser for corrections. Not a lot of corrections were required for a simple design. Twenty-one pica line length provided ...

Paper Wren Press : June 2013
http://paperwrenpress.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Anna Coleman, Illustrator. Sunday, June 30, 2013. Typesetting is Alive and Well at Paper Wren Press! In the tradition of the old Central Florida job printers, and in the tradition of my first area of professional training, I take in the occasional "job" order. After all, our beloved Iron Horses are known traditionally as "Platen Job Presses". Indeed, almost all of the Flywheel type platen presses made since the Ruggles Card Press of 1820 were dedicated Job Presses! The most pure form of printing "by hand".

Paper Wren Press : Hornbook Publication Part 2: The "Latten Frame".
http://paperwrenpress.blogspot.com/2014/10/hornbook-publication-part-2-latten-frame.html
Anna Coleman, Illustrator. Thursday, October 30, 2014. Hornbook Publication Part 2: The "Latten Frame". And the Lord's Prayer. This was what was used to teach kids how to read, and to an extent, to write. The craftsmen of the 18th century were brilliant, and very precise. And they would be amused at us, with our obsession with antiques and early Americana. The tape is removed, with a remarkably authentic covering over the slip-sheet, as seen in the photo below:. There is an adjustable back stop on the sl...

Paper Wren Press : July 2013
http://paperwrenpress.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Anna Coleman, Illustrator. Tuesday, July 2, 2013. A Type Set "Job" order, continued. . . Here is the final result: printed on a wove 67 lb stock, cut 3.25 x 5 inches, for inclusion with a letter, which will be folded into an envelope. Count is 200. Colour: Navy. A few letters, or in the lingua franca of the print shop, "sorts" in this cursive font had to be pulled and "pigged", or set aside for re-melting. Ok, so I'm going back out to the shop to finish the run. I might add that the Navy Blue was mix...

Paper Wren Press : June 2014
http://paperwrenpress.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Anna Coleman, Illustrator. Wednesday, June 25, 2014. Resurrecting A 328 Year Old Classic. Paper Wren Press Loves Letterpress. Paper Wren Press also loves Antiquities. In especially, antique and classic books. Well, after all, books are the whole reason for Letterpress. Letterpress was not developed for Polymer plates or Zinc cuts. Actually, long before Gutenberg, Europe was printing woodcuts, so illustration was not the driving force behind Letterpress. Have you ever wanted to Time Travel? You are taking...
