It’s Hot In The Desert. Tuesday, March 30, 2010. 8220;We should probably go and see some desert since we’re in Africa, huh? 8221; Ryan questioned. “I guess so, could be interesting” was Heather’s reply. With that, the map came out and a tentative route was plotted. Never mind that this route would require us to drive about 2000km in a round trip to get there and back. Saturday, February 20, 2010. Arriving at Namche Bazaar (3440m) that evening battered and bruised we thought we were in for a treat for the following day. An acclimatisation day was scheduled. Our hopes were dashed when informed that we had to wake early to walk five hours to 3900m and back. We knew we were in trouble when even the walk out of Namche was at ten-minute intervals followed by five-minute breaks. When questioned the previous evening, ‘Are there any big hills tomorrow? By the time we got to Peru and stopped for a few days in Puerto Chicama we both realised that we were well and truly exhausted from all our flitting about the world thus far. A plan was hatched to go to Costa Rica, get some sun, get some waves, get a bit healthier, and get back on track for the rest of South America. Saturday, January 30, 2010. The accommodation ranged from bamboo huts to 3 star hotel rooms for around 600 Baht a night ($20 Aussie bucks).
