Global Local D.C. Upcoming D.C. events. Exploring the cultural diversity of Washington, D.C. The Mongolian Community of Washington, D.C. May 4, 2012. Written by Rachael Marcus. I just learned that that the D.C. metro area has one of the biggest Mongolian communities in America – there are nearly 8,000 Mongolian immigrants in the area, to be exact. On assignment for my foreign correspondence class, I spent a Saturday at the Mongolian School of the National Capital Area. You can read my article on Arlingto...

Gringo guide to Ethiopian Restaurants. Addisu Ethiopian Restaurant and Grocery. November 23, 2011. My latest Eating Journey occurred over the weekend on Saturday. Addisu is an enigma, that I still have not completely formulated my opinion on yet. The location is the back corner of a strip mall in Lancaster PA. I was very intrepid upon first glance. The location is in Lancaster Pennsylvania. For those unaware, this is home to many Pennsylvania Dutch, on the drive I passed several horse drawn buggies.

Gringo guide to Ethiopian Restaurants. Home Cooked Ethiopian meal and interview with the cook. December 10, 2011. I did not venture out for an EatingJourney today. This time I did one better by inviting my readers and followers for an EatingJourney on the home-front. The meat being placed on the stovetop is organic lamb purchased from Fresh Market. You will notice the red color and lack of fat indicative of a high quality of the cut. The interview begins as the dishes simmer:. I find this true, when you ...

Gringo guide to Ethiopian Restaurants. Kaffa Crossing could be the best Ethiopian Restaurant in Philadelphia. November 5, 2011. We began our meal with an order of sambusa for an appetizer these appetizers had a crust with a consistency somewhere between phyllo dough and a non-greasy egg roll. They were flaky, spicy and had a mix of potatoes and carrots. In my humble opinion they were relatively small I think if the order came with 3-4 it could have been perfect. Stay tuned, the plan for next week is to c...

Gringo guide to Ethiopian Restaurants. ERA Bar Philadelphia what a let down. October 17, 2011. On my most recent eating journey for dinner yesterday, I went to a restaurant I had never tried before called ERA Bar. I went into the establishment with an open mind. The sign out front stated fine Ethiopian dining,. Now to why we came, for the food the pricing was very affordable with the dishes each coming with (3) sides for $9.00 each. Unlike authentic Ethiopian places the injera was served on indiv...The l...

Gringo guide to Ethiopian Restaurants. Lalibela Ethiopian Restaurant in New Jersey. December 5, 2011. That’s right followers, I made my first foray outside of Pennsylvania. I know it is silly, how can anybody call themselves a true lover of Ethiopian food and spend as much time as I do outside of Washington DC (read U Street corridor and Adams Morgan), New York and Arlington Virginia? What can I say but I am slow and do not want to miss what is in my backyard. Pictured above was a tapestry of the Ethiopi...

Gringo guide to Ethiopian Restaurants. October 25, 2011. I apologize to my readers, I did not make it to any Ethiopian restaurants last week. While I had covered briefly the Ethiopian coffee ceremony in the past, today I wanted to discuss beer and wine. Gringo guide to Ethiopian Restaurants. Newer posts →. Ethiopian culture time and scents. October 13, 2011. In between my eating journeys I will be discussing the nuances of Ethiopian eating and some of the things to expect and not to expect for that matter. Today we will go into time and scents. Some places have a show/event called an Ethiopian coffee ceremony which can be as elaborate as the Japanese tea ceremony reminiscent of Karate Kid II. Perhaps this is atypical but a personal best practice of mine...

Gringo guide to Ethiopian Restaurants. October 21, 2011. As you might recall the framework of the eating journeys is to focus on the culture surrounding Ethiopian food mid-week and exploring actual restaurants on the weekends. Practically all Ethiopian dishes with the exception of Sambusa (an appetizer similar to Samosa or empanadas) are eaten communally with your hands on a plate of injera. Some of the meats typically are beef/steak, and various types by nature always bite sized either stand-alone or wi...
