My project | globalsurgery
https://globalsurgery.wordpress.com/my-project
Site about surgery, global health, travel, politics, Africa, and my work. When I tell non-medical people the topic of my research, their eyes glaze over until they hear “vagina” and “urine” and suddenly their face contorts and their eyes get bigger. ‘What? 8217; they say, ‘That’s horrible. And it’s disgusting.’. What’s the focus of my research project? You leak urine from your vagina. And if it’s really bad, you leak feces as well. Most women do not have such a kind fate. Now what is the key word? Howeve...

Site about surgery, global health, travel, politics, Africa, and my work. Make a woman happy today. November 19, 2011. Site about surgery, global health, travel, politics, Africa, and my work. So I’m interested in surgery. General surgery, to be exact. I mentioned that recently at a visit to the student health clinic, and instead of reviewing the vaccinations I needed for my journey, the doctor began a speech to be summarized by the statement, “Why in the world would you choose that field? Branch for International Surgery. Global Surgery Research Alliance. Atul Gawande’s Surgical Safety Checklist. 8211; Phase 1 of low-co...

Site about surgery, global health, travel, politics, Africa, and my work. October 17, 2011. I am going to preface this post by stating that I am not going to discuss the hospital. I realize that my past few entries have been depressing, and you might think that all I do is work work work, so instead this post will be, as the title states, about my “brief repose”. The Abdominal Snowman: February 2012
http://jjbriggs.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, February 25, 2012. There's a bathroom on the right. If you can sing the title of the blog post out loud and automatically know which song lyric Katie's brother rewrote, you win! I don't know what you'll win. I'll be impressed? It was a weird past week in the house because I was alone for most of it. I decided since nobody was around that it would be a good time to get Ellie spayed. On the "operating table". Don't worry. It's a pig, not a human. Pig lab was really the only part of my surgery rot...

Then I went home to Texas and turned 25 with the help of some dos ritas:. I said goodbye to Princeton for a year with a deliciousssss meal. And a fourth of july trifle (1/2). But on the ACTUAL 4th of July I was in Bmore:. This is a horrible picture, o wells). Where I made MORE TRIFLES! And met my 3rd roommate:.
The Abdominal Snowman: the trip that wasn't meant to be
http://jjbriggs.blogspot.com/2012/03/trip-that-wasnt-meant-to-be.html
Thursday, March 29, 2012. The trip that wasn't meant to be. So, we had this awesome plan to go to the Nyriagongo volcano in the DRC and see real live lava. UNFORTUNATELY, some bad things happened. Some of my readers who know me well may recall that one time, almost exactly a year ago, when I jumped - just jumped - during a dodgeball game and came down and broke the 5th metatarsal on my R foot. Well. Just wait. So I was like, well I have to go to Kampala anyway to get a good xray, and I already have a tic...

The Abdominal Snowman: January 2012
http://jjbriggs.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, January 22, 2012. I wrote this post months ago, but it's no less true now. It may be even more true, since it's dry season and the water has been off for 2 weeks now. Back to water rationing.). It is over. That's what Ugandans say when you run out of something. Oh, the 1000 ul pipette tips are over. Oh, the chicken is over. Or like yesterday when I'm talking to Agnes and mid-conversation she's like "oops, it's over" and I was like.our conversation is? Hooray the clinic is getting water. Imagi...
The Abdominal Snowman: May 2011
http://jjbriggs.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html
Monday, May 9, 2011. Ok, what the heck is up with doctors in the hospital who are unable to differentiate between the he/she. This happens constantly. And it drives me INSANE. Because imagine if I'm the patient and all of my doctors are sitting around referring to "he" and "him." WTF GUYS I AM TOTALLY A GIRL. It drives me crazy. I always make a point to correct the pronoun if I join the convo, but that probs doesn't make me the most loved med student. OH WELL. Sunday, May 8, 2011. 5 assorted frozen meals.
The Abdominal Snowman: Tororo rock & Sipi Falls
http://jjbriggs.blogspot.com/2012/02/tororo-rock-sipi-falls.html
Sunday, February 5, 2012. Tororo rock and Sipi Falls. Sooo I've been here for 4 months and I had not climbed the rock until last week. Since there's literally nothing else to do in Tororo - the rock is the only attraction, and the natural wonder after which every single thing in town is named (Rock Classic Hotel, Rock View High School, etc etc.) - it's strange that I made it this long without climbing it. We went bright and early. Mara and Devan had come on Friday to visit us (hooray! We reached the top!
The Abdominal Snowman: April 2011
http://jjbriggs.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html
Thursday, April 21, 2011. When I go to safeway, I spend 60 dollars, /- 5. It's amazing because I don't try to do that. I can get 5 items or 15, and they are always, total, 60 dollars. I want to enter an olympics where I shop for things that add up to exactly sixty dollars, and then sleep for more than 12 hours. I would win ALL THE PRIZES. Tuesday, April 19, 2011. But think how much more adorable that moment would have been if she was a small child? Monday, April 11, 2011. It's in Houston. Sorry if yo...
