Cyclists riding the wrong way down one-way streets. At night. With no lights (although I have to admit I do this. Shame on me). Motorists overtaking at 60kph in 30kph zones, with a hair’s breadth to spare. Nobody stopping at the ‘Stop’ line at junctions. Anywhere. Ever. Pre-1990 Fiat Pandas. No explanation needed. No lane discipline on motorways (which feels like a deliberate insult to my Britishness). Mopeds in bike lanes. Mopeds going the wrong way in bike lines. Consistent cutting up at roundabouts.

My lovely friends in the Irish band made me a cake and gave me a collective cuddle on my birthday, shortly before setting off the following weekend for a gig at Lake Massaciuccoli near Lucca. A nature reserve with (what felt like) miles of boardwalk across star-lit reed beds, we played the main set of the night with the treat of full amplification. I’m not sure how I came to deserve it, but I’ve found another little corner of Pisa to call home. A place where our neighbours offer us tomatoes fresh from their. Where the birds are constantly chattering and the bats swoop around at dusk, weaving between the hedges and (hopefully) munching as many mosquitoes as possible. Between the trunks of the pines I can see the city walls. At the end of our street is a formidable butcher’s shop, and one of the best bakeries in town. Can’t wait to have my own.
