This is the George Mitchell Year 8 History blog. Thursday, 19 January 2012. Pirates of the 'Whydah'. Was a pirate ship that sank off Cape Cod in North America in 1717, after a bad storm. The wreck of the ship was found in the 1980s and is still being explored. Treasure hunters have found the ship's bell, its cannon and pieces of gold. The Whydah was first of all a slave ship carrying slaves from Africa to America. The ship was attacked by pirates led by 'Black Sam' Bellamy. It became their pirate ship.

In the next hundred years Islam spread east, west and north to become the largest empire the world had known. From Arabia Muslim armies marched north into what is now Iraq, Iran and Syria. They marched east to Afghanistan and northern India. They marched west to take over the whole of North Africa. They took control of most of Spain and marched into France.
