相峙，西面為台灣海峽。東西寬14.5公里，南北長11.6公里，土地面積7711.89公頃，全境略成貓犬狀，地勢平坦。 四湖鄉是一個典型的沿海農村聚落，其地理環境特性與變遷不但影響歷年四湖鄉民生活方式，也是四湖鄉歷年發展的實際見證。因為位於海邊，地形環境變化是本鄉特色之ㄧ，例如港口三條崙地區，在日治時期日均在此地建有碉堡、砲台、灌溉溝渠、營旗等設施，最後在地理環境的變化下，沉入海底，只有在退潮時仍隱約可見。 訂閱： 文章 (Atom).

1600年前後， 一股黃吳蘇傅等四姓先民，先後定居本地墾殖，是開墾本地的原始四姓。後原始四姓之中，除了傅姓之外，黃吳蘇族人陸續遷徙他地，另謀發展，留居本地者，僅寥寥數戶。 1684年本地隸屬諸羅縣，1887年改隸雲林縣，當時元長行政區稱白沙墩堡元長莊。 原始四姓內的傅姓先民，1741年定居本莊。有一位俗名「傅元掌」 者，領導族人墾地本莊居民以「元掌」稱呼本地，於是元掌之地名就此建立。 清治期間，本莊曾協助官兵擊潰賊寇，表現英勇，據云通令將「元掌莊」改為「 元長莊. 12301;，有天張地久，長年發達之意。 訂閱： 文章 (Atom).
