Nature Notes from Goathland

Nature Notes from Goathland. A phenological diary for Goathland and surrounds. Last of the harvest. Labels: cucumber. rhubarb. It rained, then it poured and then it rained some more; and a bird count. OK, this is now officially ridiculous! I emptied the water butt on Tuesday, then again on Saturday and this morning it's once again overflowing. Just for a little variety yesterday just I was starting the bird count it snowed which certainly affected the bird numbers. This is what we counted:. Blue tit - 1.

Nature Notes from Goathland: May 2010

http://www.goathlandnaturediary.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Nature Notes from Goathland. A phenological diary for Goathland and surrounds. Snow - in May. My poor tulips look as if they're getting a good dressing down and are busy inspecting their shoe laces. Even a fleece layer wasn't enough to protect the outdoor tomatoes or the gunnera - the toms are a gonna but it was only the leaves on the gunnera which will survive and put out some more leaves from the (so far) undamaged crowns. Nature Notes from Goathland. A phenological diary for Goathland and surrounds. Started on Wednesday with overnight flurries. wet and sleety. Thursday morning heavier and by today over a foot. Plus two significant power outs. Ken saw the snow buntings last Wednesday, exactly one week before the snow started falling. GWP, gunnera and skates. It's been wet and windy over the last few days, in the early hours of Wednesday I thought the windows were coming in such was the ferocity of the wind and hail. Th...

Nature Notes from Goathland. A phenological diary for Goathland and surrounds. Overnight a hard frost has drawn wonderful fern leaves on the car and crisped the grass to underfoot crunchiness. The main road has been gritted but the back road was slightly slippery underfoot this morning. Overnight temperature 1.3 °. Shivering penguins - snow in October! Green and white border. Green and white border. Wet, wet, wet, dry, wet. The garden was awash, and the plants were nearly horizontal, we ran out of dry do...

Nature Notes from Goathland: December 2011

http://www.goathlandnaturediary.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Nature Notes from Goathland. A phenological diary for Goathland and surrounds. This afternoon the long tails returned for the first time this season, over a dozen munching through the fat balls. We had a fieldfare yesterday too. It's still unseasonably warm. Woke this morning to the first real snow of the winter, only a dusting but enough to count. Stayed all day, some melt which has now frozen solid. A wildlife ramble by car! Went to Glaisdale this morning to collect some beef and on route saw over a do...

Welcome to Goathland St Mary

St Mary's Church Goathland. There has been a place of worship in Goathland, on the North Yorkshire Moors, for at least eight centuries; and at the site of the present church of St Mary since Elizabethan times. The present building, which was completed in 1896, was designed by Mr Walter H Brierly of York who said of his creation: "The qualities of simplicity, breadth and sturdiness were felt to be especially required for such a bleak moorland situation, and were aimed at in the design".
