A Joshua Tree Sojourn. April 14, 2013. The trail signs were few and far between. Many years ago I overhead someone talking about their amazing trip to Joshua Tree. One of the blossoming cacti. National Park, and when I combined that reference with what I read in the autobiography of Jim Morrison, AND the fact that the mega-famous rock band U2 named an album after the arboreal species, well, that called for a sojourn to the desert! Thus spawned the Joshua Tree Sojourn. Miles and miles in every direction.

Hangin’ On Continued. To the creek basin. A relatively flat section was rippling past, with clearly defined eddies and pools that were a deeper shade of blue. Now our second part of the hike was about to begin, as we followed the slow moving creek along the banks. Soon the creek began to pick up speed, volume and intensity. Devil’s Post pile continued . . . The first incline at elevation for the city boy was a 2.3 mile section that would take me to a saddle above the river basin, affording me bird’s eye views of the splendor. A combination of soft wool socks, long hours trudging in boots not meant for weight bearing and backpacking and my feet were blistering badly. Devil’s Postpile – A March of Blisters. February 16, 2014. Time to get out of Babylon system. Time to march to a different drum, a steady pace, a steady rhythm, a rhythm set by boots, legs, sweat and the beating of a working heart. The towers made from fire. Along this sojourn from Pacific flats to mighty Sierra peaks, my mind would be set in order, a refreshing of my system, a means of subduing the confusion of the ant-like movements of our daily routines in the city. Incredible islets just offshore towards the straights of Juan de Fuca. A twisting embrace of driftwood nymphs. Mesmerizing landscapes of ocean and sky, buttressed by lush sea mounds dotting the coastline. About halfway through the loop, we came upon the Orca petroglyphs that we were hoping to find. The Ozette Triangle Loop. May 6, 2014. The deep Pacific Northwest, way up there on the tip of coastal Washington, smells different than most places on the planet. Kind of like the smell of The Wilamette Valley in fall, a mulch-like scent of leaves piling together, and having one last massive, soggy sigh of life. 9 miles of glory start here. The smell is noxious and dank, an amalgamation of so many plants dying all at once mixed with the spritely flavor of new species taking their places. You may use these.
